IT IS USELESS TO STRESS OVER WEAKNESSES

By
Education & Training with Performance Development Strategies

Why do you want to spend all your time improving your weaknesses? Even if you attempt to do it you will never be fully satisfied, and you will be in a constant state of stress. You will be so much more productive if you are able to know your strengths. In most cases you like what you do well. So why are people beating themselves up trying to improve their weaknesses. It does not have a lasting effect in most cases. So why do you do it? And why do organizations make cooks out of mechanics?

Here is another example. When your child comes home from school with his or her report card and it shows, for example, an A in math, B in history, and a C in English, what is your response?

I think most people will talk to their child about raising the grade in English. But what if your child might have a real talent in math? He or she might become a great math genius. But it might never be realized because time was spent dwelling on weakness rather than leveraging strengths.

To put it another way, we have talents and non-talents. We can create strengths by leveraging our talents. When we spend time doing leveraging our talents, we are insuring our success and we are relaxed and enjoy what we are doing. We create our weaknesses by depending on non-talents. Here is an example.

Let’s say that you have non-talent for writing reports, attention to detail, and perfection. You would rather be working with people. If your role requires you to work with details, you are going to struggle and if you are a business owner you would do better to hire someone to take care of those details. If you have a talent for big picture 30-thousand-foot strategic thinking, where you plan and organize you will be infinitely more successful in your job or your business if you leverage that talent to maximize results. Do you know what your talents are?

One way to make sure that you are leveraging your talents is by taking a personal assessment tool. I use one but there are others out there. But whether you do this or not you will see great improvement in performance and satisfaction by understanding your attitudes, your behaviors, and, in short, your genius. This awareness will also allow you to better understand how people see you and help you improve your relationships and dealings with others. As you achieve a better understanding of your strengths, it is important to realize that no matter how developed you are in these areas, there is always room for improvement. Further developing your strengths, and using them more often, will make them even more valuable and help you be more successful.

So, first, identify your strengths and then work to strengthen and make them more valuable. You will achieve better outcomes, experience more enjoyment, and achieve more success.  To see a similar post on our website and to take the complimentary assessment go to STOP WORKING ON YOUR WEAKNESSES.

Great thoughts Grant Schneider.  I'm still learning what my strengths are.  However, I have a few talents I learned by going out of my comfort zone.  They aren't my strength but they definitely have helped me grow into a better business person!  Thank you for sharing1

Lots of great advice here, Grant. I think it's most important to be aware of what your strengths are and play to those in whatever you do, but being aware of those things you are not so good at is OK as long as you don't dwell on it and then spend all your time focused on those weaknesses rather than on what you are good at. Sometimes a reminder such as this post is essential!

Roy - have a great day.

Edward - one way is to delegate to someone else.

Kat - it makes us much more successful.

Paula - absolutely but don't neglect leveraging the strengths.

Faye - right, instead of really making the strenghts stronger!

Will - don't work too hard.

Hannah - thank you so much.

Laura - so true.  Learn to delegate.

Jeff -  sometimes you also miss the celebrations and wins because you are not focusing on them.

Sham - right on.

You can trust me for all your real estate needs!

It's super difficult for me to be excited about something when a deal or a client isn't going well. I tried to make everyone comfortable, happy and feel like I am doing a great job. When something is out of whack with something it's hard for me to enjoy the good clients because I'm focused on fixing the bad... Personal problem, I know :)

Hi Grant,

Excellent info that I read on Roy Kelley's blog.

I have never thought of strengths and weaknesses in the way you have conveyed them.  Delegating those things/weaknesses to someone (an admin) to handle obviously will make one more productive instead of putting your efforts into trying to improve something that you truly are not good at or don't like altogether.  It's all about delegation.  That time that you waste on improving could be spent earning more money than it would cost you for an assistant.  The only other challenge is finding a reliable assistant. LOL

This is also why Realtors are Realtors, inspectors are inspectors and lenders are lenders. It all works best when you find quality people you can trust to stay in their lane.

Thank you for such an interesting article. Recently, I very often come across such useful articles that help me to rebuild my life in the right direction. Recently I read about how important it is to keep the house clean here https://www.homoq.com/mess-ruins-our-lives/ and now I will not pay so much attention to my cons, only to the pros.

I love this post, and as a math nerd wh struggles with past participles or adverb conjunctions..   ( whatever those are) I am ready to take your aptitude test.

BTW, when I had surgery recently I was sedated, not under, and spent 3 hours discussing 5-digit prime numbers with the surgeon.  Just an easy way to occupy my mind.

That said, I always try and hire people with a different personality and different strengths than the ones I have.

Thanks for posting Grant.

We all have weaknesses.  It is best to assess our pros and cons and when we partner with different people -- whether it be friends, family, associates or past/present/potential clients -- we can evaluate how our relationship can bring benefit to one another.  That is taking a weakness and making two people stronger together.

Insightful yet also alarming toward not striving for continuous improvement, especially on weak skills. Striving to become a champion without handicaps is a goal that can be attained  Perseverance, commitment and discipline are essential elements IMO to overcome weaknesses.
