Nearing Normal
As much as “normal” seems to be overused in regular times, these days it may lack the proper oomph or impact with its current overworked status. Add terms like a return of normal, the new normal as well as similarly themed messages and it’s easy to see how the monotonous mumbling may have an opportunity to grow among us. Yeah, I hear ya but. . .
The other day while walking I received a bit of a jolt. Almost spoken in a “stand up and pay attention” elementary school teacher-like voice that snapped me out of near-daze. “Stay in your own lane”. But it wasn’t directed towards me but from a mother to her two young children to alert them to oncoming traffic on the sidewalk as they skipped along in my direction.
While it’s not unusual to see people while out and about, there seems to be more of them these days. Seeing. Being. Doing.
And I see enjoyment, hear laughter, smell the aromas and generally sense a heightened awareness. Yes, there are still masks required in certain situations, closed storefronts and restrictions aplenty in my Southern California neighborhood. But there is also evidence of other things happening.
There are signs. Returning businesses, coming soon announcements and grand openings may not be abundant but there are definitely signs. Literal and figurative.
It’s amazing what you can realize while out and about. It’s why I ponder. And wonder. Wander too. All while staying in my own lane. Well, I do try. More or less. . .
