Are you ready for a fun music video? Why not?
Today’s Soundtrack song is from one of my favorite artists Paul Simon. Simon who’s career has spanned generations has tried his hand at so many different genre’s you will always be guessing what he will do next.
The song is about two boys hanging out in the schoolyard who were caught doing something that one should never do. Just exactly what they did is and forever will remain uncertain. When the songs character “Mama Pajama” reports them, the police arrest them. Fortunately for the boys the radical priest comes to their aid and they are released.
Simon who grew up in the Corona neighborhood of Queens, New York uses his old home as the backdrop for the song.
When Simon was asked, “Just exactly what did Mama see?” He responded with. “I have no idea what it is… I have never bothered to figure it out.”
When Simon released his greatest hits album Negotiations and Love Songs in 1988 he created a video which re-popularized the song.
The video features an introduction by hip-hop artists Big Daddy Kane and Biz Markie. It is somewhat tongue in check that a young Simon chose to show himself playing basketball on the playground with NBA star Spud Webb.
He also challenges Hall of Fame baseball player Mickey Mantle to a game of stickball. And yes, that is John Madden trying to offer the local boys some tips on basketball which they promptly ignore.
So here you go, a fun video and Soundtrack song, Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard.
