Forgetting June Gloom

And Celebrating June Bloom

I have long heard of June Gloom.  In many, if not most, Southern California communities(and points up the coast as well) know, it is a close companion to Gray May.

Wikipedia has a condensed explanation about clouds, cooler(relatively, mind you) temps and other weather occurrences.   It’s a bit more complicated than that but don’t worry I will not attempt to "go meteorological" with an in-depth explanation or a serious discussion even if I could explain it.

Whether you have a June Gloom kinda approach to life or a more upbeat June Bloom attitude, each day awaits and you can create it.  Yes, it’s your choice despite what may be predicted or forecast.

Good evening Michael - from my perspective I prefer to put a bright bloom on June.

Michael Jacobs - I've been a girly girl since the day I was born. Since I had four sisters and we had lots of girl cousins and very few boys in the family, we all thought of June and the Bride's Month! It seemed like everybody was getting married in June. It was a happy occasion and we never referred to it as June gloom. But then again, perhaps my dad did and he never told me. My oldest cousin Barb got married in June, my oldest sister got married in June after HS graduation; then my other sis 13 months older than me graduated and got married, and since I'm the third girl in my family, guess what happened after I graduated and can you guess what month I got married? Oh, and the boy who lived downstairs from me got married a week before me in June of course, before me! Yes, I think my dad would say June gloom.

Morning Michael.

Other than the constant rain, June is a month I enjoy because of warmer temperatures.

Chris Ann Cleland - may the celebrating of many things continue for you throughout June.

Endre Barath, Jr. - ah, your "chilling out" secret has been revealed.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - back in the days when I was in retail June was thought of that special time for Dads, Grads and Brides.  Many special events take place this month.

Grant Schneider - perspective continues to offer reflection each and every moment.

James Dray - I have never been to Arkansas.  I'm still trying to figure out why Arkansas is pronounced one way and the similarly spelled Kansas another.  Talk about pondering material. . .

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - I certainly spent times on the sales floor during many months of June over the years even when I didn't have direct customer contact.  For buyers, much of the planning of merchandise sales occur far in advance of the actual month when the sales take place.  Unlike the spigot and the water that results, there is a bit longer process to make it happen.

Michael Jacobs - I never thought about how busy the month of June is for retailers and their employees. I'll bet you were on your feet  all the time and couldn't wait to come home and just sit down or soak in the tub to relax those leg and foot muscles. Retail is hard work! And of course, as my mind wonders, which it always tends to do, it's no wonder why the roads are contgested and the events and the transportation of people and goods comes at a price; thus the reason why the economy grows!

Michael, it has been raining so much here, you would think we were in the Northwest!  Very unusual here, but today there is only a slight chance for rain.

Hi Michael Jacobs - I remember it all too well!  This is one of the main reasons we bought a home in Sedona Arizona.  I will take 280+ days of sunshine anytime.  Watching the sunrise is a very big deal to me and my husband.

But your attitude about June Bloom is great.  This is the first time I ever heard that.

Before my husband retired, we went to a lot of areas on vacation.  Back then, we loved Washington state. But there was too much rain and overcast to ever really consider it as a choice to retire.

Will Hamm - some rain is good, right?

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - I have only been to Washington once, it didn't rain while I was there but it was certainly green.  That was nice.

Good evening Michael Jacobs ,

I've never heard the term June Gloom. We've had lots of rain and storms in May and I'm ready for it to go away! The first 5 days of June have had some sunshine but not as much as I'd like to see! I like the sun, blue sky and know I now couldn't live where that is not the norm for the  majority of the days of the year.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - it seems by reading the comments, June Gloom is definitely a weather phenonenon in California.  Definitely not one that is mentioned much in guidebooks but it is a "fact of life".  Well, kinda.  It impacts each of us differently.

Hi Michael! Well, I have never hear of either - in fact, May and June here are all about flowers, gardens and weddings - and getting outdoors to play. It's happy time here on the East coast so, these phenomena must be a California thing! 😉

Debe Maxwell, CRS - with our overall good weather, those times when the sun is rather sporadic with making its appearance, helps us appreciate the sunny times even more.

Michael, I come, 'born and raised'  in 'UP NORTH'country - Wisconsin and Illinois.  I have never heard of Gray May or June Gloom.  In fact, after our hard, cold and icy winters and fierce March winds, we always looked forward to April, May and June.
Our song was:  And April showers bring May flowers.  And therefore, they were very happy months and blooming beautiful, colorful and fragrant flowers all over the place.  For instance, the Tulips, Daffodils, the Lily of the Valley, Lilacs, and Bridal Wreath.  We always has enough 'blooms' to adorn our May altars. These 3 months were some of our very favorite months before we hit the hot and humid July and August.

Michael, no more gloom, just HOT HOT HOT now.  We are to hit 100 today, and that is just too hot.    Is LA hitting records temps too?

Jane Chaulklin-Schott - the flowers still bloom even when the sun doesn't shine as intensely as it does at other times.

Joan Cox - I have been hearing about the heat wave you and others have been experiencing, it has been hotter here too.  It's all good.

Weather is out of our ability to control, therefore, we need to make peace with it, or move to climate that better suits our needs. We also experience the marine layer inversion during June, although this year, it's been either rainy or hot and sunny. We're in the hot and sunny pattern right now.  I like your attitude - choosing to bloom in the gloom.
