AR's Outside Blogs - A BIG Mistake.

Everyone is so excited about the new outside blogs. But has anyone stopped to think about what this will do for Activerain's SEO???

I think its great that AR is working hard to improve their blogging network. But to create a new network of blogs that will run parallel with a pre-existing network on the same domain is a bad idea!

I have been a Web Developer/SEO consultant for 8 years. If anyone thinks that duplicate content doesn't have an affect on SERPs they are crazy! Yes a few duplicated article won't hurt but we are talking about duplicating an entire network of blogs that currently has over 94,000 users, Search Engine algorithms are going to have a hard time missing that. I was just appount to leave a post saying the same thing. Seriosly, do the AR developers know something we don't know? Won't all the duplicate content simply hurt SEO for everyones Active Rain Blog Posts? All my AR blog posts are now in two locations....

Joe.  One word....duh....I am trying to figure this one out too, I mean Google has come a long way at discerning accidental dupe content, printer friendly dup etc.., but this is self inflicted.  The only thing this will cause is one version of the article to be shown, and at that could cause mass mayhem with AR, and drop PR for these articles.

I totally agree with you.  I attend yearly conferences at Pub-Con, SMX, and have to say I am a little scared at what AR is doing here.  Panel after panel discusses the penalties SE's assess to this.

Actually Ty,

According to this post things aren't going to be as bad as they first appeared. However, I still think that AR is walking a very fine line with google on this one. There have been several honest companies that have tried simular types of things that through no fault of Google have been penalized big time in the SERPs.

Good article.  I still am perplexed at the payback though.  Is it worth the risk?  Why not add social media buttons to the post's. or create a stir in other areas?  It seems strange to me to sydicate your very own articles 3-4 times.  To me this serves no purpose other than branding.

I would much rather focus on SMM, and original content on other channels, such as Squidoo, and my personal blog.

That said, it does appear they are addressing potential problems.

I have multiple blogs, but write different content for each one.  Not sure why a social network platform is promoting "outside" blogs.

Thanks for the discussion. I'm just trying to figure out what all the SEO stuff means. I guess I'm just along for the ride with AR hoping those who know more will figure it all out.
