Well June of 2021 has come to an end, and so the The Soundtrack of a Lifetime will go back on hiatus for another year. When I started the series back in 2018, the goal was to share some of the songs that I have enjoyed throughout my lifetime. The first song I featured was School Days by Chuck Berry.
Chuck Berry was one of the first and most influential rockers of all time. His distinctive guitar riffs, his on stage dance steps, including his distinctive “duck walk”, that every rocker ever has tried to copy, made him an international star. Berry had a unique ability to turn every song into a story that people could identify with and of course, sing along with.
So, to close out the 2021 session we can listen to Chuck Berry’s first big hit record, Maybellene. Written and recorded in 1955 it is considered the essential pioneering Rock & Roll song. The lyrics describe a man who is chasing his unfaithful girlfriend, her in a Cadillac Coupe DeVille, him in his V8 Ford. The story had everything that appealed to young audiences in 1955. Fast cars, a high-speed chase on a country road, the implications of a romantic relationship, and of course great music.
Maybellene was one of the first records to be a hit on the Rhythm & Blues, Country, and Pop charts at the same time. The song appealed to audiences young and old.
The video that you will see today was recorded in Belgium. It wasn’t well produced, these were the days before music videos, it is blurry in sections and the camera’s switch off a bit too often, but it has good sound and is still a lot of fun to watch and listen.
Until next time, let’s all do the duck walk as we listen to Maybellene.
