Do you understand network marketing? Are you benefiting here on AR?

When I ask these questions, I am referring to Active Rain. It is not the more common thought of network marketing such as you local chamber of commerce, BNI, etc.  But AR is a form of network marketing.  And network marketing, WHEN DONE CORRECTLY, can be VERY powerful and useful!  It normally will get you more business than just about any other kind of marketing.  But in our 'want it now' society, people get discouraged because they do not get business from it right away.  Also many do not do it correctly, as I stated about 'when done correctly' it can be powerful, when done incorrectly, it IS a COMPLETE waste of time and effort!

As I was searching blogs and profiles yesterday, I came up with some thoughts - imagine that.  I wrote a blog - Think Professional some time ago.  I've also seen others write their own equivalent versions of the same thing.  Yet when I searched a blog yesterday, I came across a blog that had two sentences then their name and some contact information.  Basically it boiled down to - please give me referrals, and I will give you money for those referrals.  Does this person think that money is the only important thing to everyone here on AR?  So if I send someone to this person, I get money, and I don't care what kind of treatment my friend or family gets, as long as I get money for the referral?  Is this the only thing that motivates this person?  I have to KNOW you, TRUST you, BELIEVE that you will take care of the person I send you.  Remember, how my referral is treated by you is a reflection of ME!!!  Put yourself in others shoes, would YOU send a referral to someone like that?  An additional thing I saw, was this person had no picture, no profile information, nothing.  What makes this person even think for a second, no matter how good they may be, that I would I send someone to them?  WHY???  Question MarkI know nothing about them, they are not telling me anything about themselves so I can learn about who they are, and I get money for the referral.  Do they really think that is the way network marketing works?  I hope this person sees this blog, and a Light Bulblight bulb goes on, because this can be a powerful marketing tool, if done correctly.  Did I say that again?  Must be important!

I saw another person and saw something interesting as well.  They had about the same number of points as I do.  But what was interesting, they had three times the number of blogs.  Certainly, if you have a lot of listings and such, you will put them up and get points for them and not necessarily a lot of comments on them.  Then you might do a lot of blogs and only get credit for some of them (10 a week - but AR will sometimes give you points on additional blogs if they are really good blogs) so that can effect your points and how many you get.  But this was not the case here - I saw another big statistic that undoubtedly has a BIG impact on the points they receive!  They made less than two dozen comments, and had only a little more than one hundred received.  I have 853 comments made and 422 received, and I think those numbers are low!  Also, when looking at their blog six out of their last 10 blogs were about a particular area in their marketing area.  Not listings, just descriptions of the area and some of the buildings.  Understand, it wasn't like these are cool historic buildings that would capture an interest, or everyone would be fascinated in general with the buildings, just on and on about the buildings.  Nothing much to comment on for everyone finding this blog.  But this person isn't getting the full benefit of AR either.  How are they reaching out to let everyone here know about them?  What motivates them, why are they interesting?  WHY should I send them business even if I had some for their area??

What are these people getting out of AR?  I can't imagine very much.  And there are obviously many on here at AR that just put up profiles, maybe even some blogs and such for a while, and just expect to get business from AR.  Guess what, it will NOT work that way.  Yes you might even get lucky and get a rare listing or sale or something from AR, but that can be purely luck as well.  You can get tons of help and business from AR if you do it correctly!  Boy I said that AGAIN!  And you can make friends as well, and who do you think I will send my business to if I come across business in an area other than where I am, someone that blends in with so many others here on AR and says they will give me money if I give them business?  Or, someone that I feel I have a connection with, or even better yet a friendship with??  Network marketing, WHEN DONE CORRECTLY, can be VERY powerful, and it WILL get you a lot of business, not right away, but in time!  Are you one of the 97% (like the two I described here in this blog) or are you part of the 3%?  Guess who will get more business?   Why are you here on AR, to get business?

Yes, Ron

You said it again, "If you do it correctly"

I am not sure if your post will help the 97% or discourage them even more.

I think Active Rain is a great tool to attract more business and learn a lot about blogging, marketing and to introduce yourself to the world etc. but I myself have a hard time finding my way around in AR and a lot of things I have done here on AR might have been a waste of time. There is no "checklist"  of how to do it the "correct" way and sometimes I get discouraged with the overload of info and sometimes I just do not know where to find the time to answer or write posts.

I do understand that there are a lot of people who want to do it right, but just do not know how.

Ronald - I believe that what you put into AR is what you will get out of it. Posts that are created for the sole purpose of points will yield no long term benefit to its creator. Thoughtful posts and comments is the best way to find new associates, friends and expand business relationships.

As the network grows in popularity there will be new comers looking for short cuts or quick fixes to remedy the short coming of their marketing. Others may not have the expertise or experience and it is our responsibility to help them in the right direction.

Best wishes!

Anne, I hope it doesn't discourage the 97%, because network marketing CAN be powerful, but these are examples of what NOT to do, and once corrected, they can receive tremendous benefits - not right away mind you, but over time!  Also, time is difficult I understand, but it can be worth it in the long run!  I also understand it can be an overload, but it is important to take some time and learn how to do it and obtain the benefits - ask questions, look around.  Then over time, it will come back to you in many ways!!  IMNJ, you hit the nail on the head - what you put into it is what you get back!  So VERY true, and so often forgotten!  Thanks Anne & IMNJ for stopping by, have a great weekend!

Cheryl, you are very welcome!  I do like to help people, but also, when I see things like this, I know they are not receiving anything from it, but as IMNJ pointed out, you get what you put into it!  These are also the same people that wonder 'why it didn't work' and why they didn't receive business from their 'marketing effort.'  I hope they see blogs like this, and realize how powerful it CAN be, and that they CAN receive business from it, but they need to think about it from a different perspective.  If the shoe was on the other foot, would you send business to one of these people I wrote about?  Of course not, and it is easy to see once it is pointed out.  Thank you as well for stopping by, and BTW, call me Ron!

Great post Ronald! I personally use active rain to keep up with current trends/concerns within the Real Estate industry. It also gives me access to the condition & trends in every part of the country, especially in this market!

While I surely hope to attract Realtors to my business by posting here, I belong solely for the invaluable information that is shared here. I do try to write an article once in a while as a motivational piece; but there are other ways to get an article covered on the internet that are more efficient, so I prefer to go that route. That said, the level of professionalism, expertise and willingness to share on this site is not duplicated anywhere else online. I have participated in multiple Realtor networking sites, and never have I seen a community that is so generous with sharing their knowledge and information! That's why I prefer AR over the other Realtor networking sites.

Thanks for the good information. I am looking at a new approach for Active Rain, as I have little fruit so far. Although I do enjoy my search engine rankings being increased!

Pippa, ROTFLMAO - Smiley Face  Network Marketing isn't THAT bad - besides you get to meet and know different people.  That's pretty great, isn't it?  :-)  Markelle, thank you .  I agree the wealth of information and helpful tips you get here is incredible.  Thanks everyone for stopping by!  James, there is a `TON of info here, and like Anne said, it can be overwhelming.  Start with how you are most comfortable, and as you learn new ideas and tips, incorporate them in future blogs.  Everyone here (well most anyway) are super helpful!  Have a great day!

Ronald, I am a huge proponent of networking marketing, the internet and the use of technology. The only problem is that the longer I participate in AR, the more and the less I know....that may seem weird to some, but for the neophytes like myself, it should be perfectly understood.  There is sooooo much to learn and  I know so little about how to actaully make this owrk for my biusiness model, it is a little overwhelming. But As  you can see, I am very pesistent and with a lot of trial and error, I will hopefully get a handle on it......as I like to say, "it won't be because I did not try". The difference though is that I am determined to make this work. I think it is the future. Using technology applied to make old fashioned values work in the 21st century (how's that for an endorsement?

Thanks for the thoughts and vehicle to post some thoughts.

Bo, you do just fine!!  Most of us, including me have plenty to learn, but the people (and the many like them) I wrote about are wasting their time.  But I hope they see blogs like this, then realize they need to make some changes in order to receive the benefits, or find a different marketing strategy altogether.  The people that just put up their profile and nothing more, aren't wasting a lot of time and effort and are not surprised when they don't receive business.  Those that do things like my other example won't get much either, but they are the ones that will say they did all this blogging "work" and wonder why it didn't work.  I'm hoping they see this and wonder if they would refer to someone doing the things that they are doing.  Of course the answer is no - and if they see this, they will understand why not, and make the changes and ultimately receive the tremendous benefit of network marketing.  BTW, as I said, you do an great job, and I look forward to doing business with your company!  Norma, the referrals will come with time!!  Stick with AR, and learn all you can, and keep blogging!                         Have a great day!
