July Is National Lost Pet Prevention Month: Tips For Pet Parents

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Realty

WHY JULY IS NATIONAL LOST PET PREVENTION MONTH:

ONE IN THREE PETS ARE LOST OR STOLEN IN THEIR LIFETIME!

80% OF PETS ARE NEVER RECOVERED!

A FAMILY PET IS LOST EVERY 2 SECONDS IN NORTH AMERICA!

Lost Pet Statistics

We already know that more pets get lost during the July 4th holidays than any other day of the year. But did you know that some 10 MILLION dogs and cats are lost or stolen each year? That's 14% of dogs and 15% of cats;  Cat owners were less likely to find their cat. Just 74% of lost cats are recovered, while 93% of lost dogs are recovered. For more statistics about this epidemic of lost pets in the USA click here.

DON'T LOSE YOUR PETS: 7 TIPS TO KEEP THEM SAFE

  1. MICROCHIP your pet. It's a painless process and will be "good" for your pet's lifetime. And be sure to properly license your pet.

  2. PUT ID TAGS on your pet's collar. Make sure the collar is secure. Tags should include your name and phone number. (My dog's collar tag has his name, my name, my phone number and my address.)

  3. KEEP YOUR DOG ON A LEASH when outside your property. Of course, leashing a dog is the law in many towns and cities. It's also a law that seems to be broken a lot.

  4. TEACH YOUR DOG STAY & COME COMMANDS. That way, when you are outside on a street, in a park, a parking lot, if for some reason your dog gets out of your grasp and runs, they are likely to listen to your command and come back.

  5. DON'T LEAVE YOUR PETS ALONE OUTSIDE for any length of time, especially at night, if you're in an area prone to coyotes, mountain lions, hawks, other predators.

  6. FENCE YOUR YARD and make sure the gates are secure and always closed. And make certain the fencing you use doesn't allow your dog to push through the fence slats.

  7. SECURE YOUR HOME. Make certain your dogs and cats can't escape out the windows or doors.

Nina,

Amazing numbers for lost pets, and the contrarian side of things, some of those pets may not want to be found.    Some do runaway from their owners.  Happy Fourth!  A

Rocky Dickerson hi Rocky... I just can't imagine losing either of my fur-babies. I am very attached to them. There is a reason one of our daughters refers to them as her brothers!

Ron and Alexandra Seigel hi Alexandra... those numbers are multiples of what I was expecting to see when I started doing some research. I was totally gob-smacked by these statistics. No doubt, some animals are quite happy to run away from home, but I have to think that for most it's just an unfortunate event and that if their owners were more careful it wouldn't have happened.

Nina,

None of our creatures ever ran away..  One of our friends lost his Siamese, but within 3 days the cat was back!  Our friend stated that his cat knew where the caviar was served.  LOL A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel hi Alexandra... Bingo has bolted a couple of times... once when he was off leash in the garage with my husband and I pulled out in my car. Well, he went running after me and my car like a bat out of hell! Fortunately, all the neighbors know Bingo and someone put him on a leash and brought him back to our home. I no longer pull out of the garage if he's in there and not leashed.

Hi Nina- I wish more people were as concerned about their pets as you and other members here are. Every morning when I check in at NextDoor I scroll through all of these lost dogs or cats.

Kathy Streib hi Kathy... I must see half a dozen lost/found pet announcements each day! As a pet mom I just can't understand how casual people are about keeping their pets safe.

Hi Nina,  Thank you for sharing this information on tips for keeping your pets safe.  We have several rescue pets - 3 of which are 13 years old or older. When the time comes, we will be looking into shelters for our new buddies.

Morning Nina.

A truly sad day for us, we are going to have to let one of our fur babies go this morning.  We are taking her to an emergency vet for the job.

Ed Silva good morning, Ed... animals you adopt from a shelter are generally all chipped these days. Wish more people whose pets did not come from shelters would chip their pets.

Endre Barath, Jr. hi Endre... my heart just about stopped when I read these statistics myself. I knew lost pets were an issue but not to this extent. And why people aren't more careful with their pets during holidays like this is something that always amazes me.

I need to get one of those collars that has Captain's name, phone number and address woven into it - tags can get lost but it is harder to lose a collar that fits well - great advice - great reminders

It seems simple to me, but then again I am not a pet guy.  Pets that are well cared for and loved don't usually come up missing, am I right?

Brian England hi Brian... even in good homes, pets can get lost. Someone delivered me a package the other day and left my front gate open... Bingo got right out. Fortunately all our neighbors know Bingo so someone brought him back in about 3 minutes.
