My heartbreaking day...goodbye Yodi and Nila

By

Ok, we decided that the 2 pitbulls that we rescued needed to be separated and put into more experienced bull breed homes.  My friend, a far more experienced handler of bull breeds, came over to see how big they were betting and was very alarmed by the behavior they displayed...They were turning aggressive toward my dogs at 11 weeks old.  I might not have seen what was happening if not pointed out but...she made it very clear to me so...we decided that we could not risk it or become more attached so we made the appropriate contacts and said some very tearful goodbyes...

here are some pictures I took before

Yodi with his big blue eyes...

Nila and Yodi in the garden

Nila stretching out...isn't she adorable...

Oh, my heart aches...they were wonderful but, I don't feel that we could do them justice, I will keep up on their progress but boy is this a difficult one...

I feel your pain! I used to raise them back in the 70's & 80's . They are a tough breed to handle on a daily basis. You never know when you might be in a lawsuit. My last one weighed 90 lbs. and was a gentle giant. I'm so glad my choice now is a small dog. Never thought I would do that...but I really do love her.

My heart breaks for your sad story. I know that you have made a very difficult decision and that you understand they will be the better for it. I also understand that that does not make it any easier for you. You and Yodi and Nila will all be in my thoughts.

Those pits are beautiful.  With proper handling, the aggression they apparently began to display, should be tempered.  I always marvel at Cesar Millan.  He has 37 dogs in his compound, a large percentage of them pits, and he has no problems.  I truely believe pits are not the problem, we are.  You did the right thing by finding an appropriate place for them to learn how to be proper dogs.  Sometimes our best intentions are just not enough.

Patrice- If you don't mind my asking what were they doing that was pointed out that made you come to this decision? I agree with Terry, especially at that young age with proper training and socialization it should be rather easily controlled. If I had the extra money to adopt one (unfortunatly I couldn't adopt both without getting either a breeders license which I don't want to pay for since I won't breed, or a kennel license which is required for more than 2 dogs in my county) and get it shipped here I would do it in a heart beat (eventhough the fiancee would be mad at me lol). I am sorry to hear about your loss, I hope you keep us updated as much as possible, I love those adorable little faces :-D

Terry and Chris

You are right, with proper handling ... I had 2 people (who are big pit bull/bull breed rescuers) come here to observe them and I was advised that I was not going to be a good home for them.  I have another bull breed (a cane corso mastiff) and 3 other dogs.  One of the people who came has one of the nicest pits I have ever met, I adore her but...she said, "you don't have a tory here" .  Basically, there are 2 points here,

1. my bull breed, Josie is already showing dominance and a tendency toward agression if pushed and

2.  these puppies were pushing the envelope and ganging up on my small dogs at 11 weeks.  I saw this as puppy play but was told that what was happening was a sign of aggression already.  My jack was playing back and turned Nila over and Nila never stopped snarling, even when she was told to back down.  This is the sort of behaviour that is a warning of what is to come, I am told.

Quite frankly, the situation was quite manageable now but would not be something I could deal with when they are a yr old and they start that with Josie and she decides to fight them back.

Maybe my post needed to be more speciic that I could not handle the future situation and that I was not dominant enough in this pack to handle the bull breed.  It is far easier to place them now and that is why I acted as quickly as I did.

Trust me, this was extremely difficult (still is as I sit here crying) but I do believe it was the right thing for me right now.

Chris, I wish you could adopt one, those faces are just so kissable...I can assure everyone that they will go to a very good home, I will be all over them till I know that and then after if possible too.

Robin, thanx for the kind words, I am ripped apart about this and you put it well.  I am a good animal person, a good rescuer and will rescue again, thanx

Patrice- Thank you for sharing what was going on eventhough I know it was hard to do. And you are totally right in your decision (not that I ever doubted you or disliked you for it, you are a great person, great animal lover, and amazing in your work of educating people of rescues and spay/neuter), I too feel your pain, but knowing you will look over them and make sure they go to great homes is the most important thing for all involved. Yes, it was definitly better to do so now then at a year old for so many reasons (I am sure eventhough they will be quite big your cane corso would probably teach them a lesson or two along the way since she is already dominant and somewhat aggressive when pushed, and knowing that I would not suggest another bull breed of any type until Josie passes unless she can be and is broken of that aggression). While yes the actions they were displaying is part of normal puppy play, when instructed to stop they should otherwise yes problems will almost definitly arise in the future, and those you told you that are totally right. Please keep us updated on these gorgeous pups if possible, man I wish I could adopt them. You are totally right they are just so kissably adorable :-*

Well all, the little girl has gone to a new home where she will be handled by a man that has had prior experience with the breed and is very excited.  i know him a little so I am happy about this choice.

Patrice - I think that its very commendable of you to make this hard decision while the pups are still pups.  It sounds like you are taking your time finding the right homes for these two as well.  Good call.  I know it's hard, but you can consider this a 'fostering' experience.

I would imagine anyone who homes a cane corso (mix) is very able to home pit bulls... just possibly not at the same time.  I've always made it imperative to consider the existing family's comfort level with bringing in a new pet prior to accepting a new animal into the house, but the more pet personalities you have, the harder it can be to find the right one to fit the mix.
