Peter Lowe was born in Scotland circa 1550. Around 1565 he left to study medicine completing his studies in Paris, France and by 1589 was a surgeon to the Spanish Regiment in the service of Phillip II of Spain at the siege of Paris. In the early 1590’s he travelled to England with Alexander Dickson.
While there he surveyed several harbors, sending details back to James VI in Scotland. On his return to France he was appointed surgeon to Henry IV of France. He settled in Glasgow around 1598 where he set up his medical practice in the west of the country. He petitioned the King and was granted a Charter which enabled the foundation of a medical incorporation for physicians and surgeons. The college later expanded to include dentists, making it the only institution in the British Isles to admit all three professions. Maybe you’ve heard of it, the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Glasgow.
