A Savory Story - Let's (Not) Cook

By
Education & Training with Although I'm retired, I love sharing my knowledge and learning from other real estate industry professionals.

Since I've been widowed, I find cooking for myself to be one of my biggest challenges.  Honestly, cooking has never been one of my favorite things.

I always felt a little cheated because I didn't grow up with a mother or grandmother who taught me to cook.  After my Mom and Dad died my brother and I went to live with an Aunt and Uncle. My Aunt didn't particularly like to cook. She was too busy doing her sewing, knitting, and other craft projects. She put basic meals together each evening but she never wanted me in the kitchen helping her.  The good news is, she did teach me to sew and knit and I made most of my own clothes when I was growing up. If I was half as good at cooking as I became at sewing and knitting I'd probably have my own cooking show on TV now.  LOL

Don't get me wrong, I CAN cook but only because I can read.  I can read a recipe and put pretty much anything together with instructions.  After I married Max, I started collecting cookbooks when we traveled. I put many holidays meals together for the family and every year I would try something new out of a different cookbook. That was kind of fun and I never had any disasters.

It's not particularly fun to cook for myself so I don't tend to make myself regular meals.  I do cook up batches of things and put individual servings in the freezer for quick easy meals but an actual fresh meal, not so much.

My favorite way to cook is to have someone else do it for me.  Much of my social life involves eating out... not JUST eating but there is usually eating at some point.  Even when I go golfing, we usually have lunch afterward. And, I often try to order something that I know will be good as leftovers.

I'm one of those people who can see images in the clouds. I thought everyone did this until I talked to my brother and a few other people who said they have never been able to do that. Interesting how the human brain works.

Anyway, I recently discovered when you eat out as much as I do you're bound to start seeing faces in your food too.  This image is from a batch of nachos.

So, here is my favorite savory recipe:

Ingredients
* Friends or family (any quantity you choose for a large or small batch)
* Choose a restaurant and a time to meet

Instructions:
Gather together, order your favorite beverage, choose a meal.  Sit back and relax and enjoy each other's company while you wait for the food to come.

This is my second (and last) entry into Rocky Dickerson's July Challenge- Savory Stories.

I'm like you Carol.  I prefer to cook up batches, and freeze, so I'm not in front of a stove everyday.  That salad looks scrumptious.  You especially got my attention with the addition of bacon.  I love that stuff.

Morning Carol.

It's just me and the wife now.  We usually either go out or stop and bring something home.  In the long run, we like it.

Hi Anna Banana Kruchten CRS, CRB, Phoenix Broker
It's unusual when that happens with food but I'm amazed at how often the clouds form images.  It's all fun and everything is more fun with friends, as you well know!

Hi Kathy Streib
Yes, the stores are becoming more "single friendly", which is nice. I do watch quite a bit of the food channel and it has helped me be a little more creative with my cooking.

It's hot here so I'm staying safe inside my home almost all weekend.  Hope you and Delores are doing well.

Keep cool and stay safe. We expect some rain today in Maryland. I will not need to water the garden.

Hi George Souto
If I ever find another companion it would be nice if he likes to cook. It would be more fun together.

Carol - I certainly am not excited about cooking for one.  I don't think I would fare any better.  But savory dinners out with friends.  That is a good idea.

I think it would be fun to have someone to share cooking with. My husband didn't really care to cook. It was one of his few faults.  LOL

I find faces in everything. I'm sure I have written about it; it's called  'pareidolia.'

Hi Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400
Interesting. I did not know that terminology. It's a fun phenomenon. Thanks for expanding my vocabulary. Of course I had to look up the proper pronunciation.

Oh, I love this, Carol! That salad looks divine and I thought that was going to be your recipe!! LOL I'm with you that dining out is such a fun way to socialize - that always seems to be when we have the most fun with our friends.

I can relate on a much smaller scale to the level of the difficulty of cooking for one. When Ray spent 4 months in Denver, at first I thought, while I totally enjoy cooking, I was going to get a 'break' from cooking...Oh, and I could eat breakfast for dinner every night!! That's my favorite thing to have for dinner and Ray doesn't think you should eat bacon & eggs except during the hours of 7AM & 9AM!! LOL

THEN, the challenge set in...I realized I can't eat breakfast every evening. I thought maybe I just won't eat, right? Thankfully I discovered avocado toast in Denver when I was visiting Ray and decided to perfect my version every time I was home. It became a challenge that I so enjoyed. I've turned so many of my friends on to avocado toast - and it gave me something to do during my boredom in the evenings when I was home!
