Savvy Marketing: Are You Focusing or Rubbernecking?

By

Seizing control of what you focus your attention upon, as a luxury  or any other real estate marketing professional, is   critical in any economy. Your personal success is actually the result of where you place and hold your attention.

Those who seek out and consistently focus on the positive opportunities of their marketplace experience an entirely different set of financial results compared to those who “rubberneck”, i.e., continuously fixate on what is going wrong, or what someone else is doing.

What is exciting to know about focus is that you actually have the power to choose where you place your attention.  However, if you do not exercise this power the results, by default, will be detrimental to your practice.

Rubbernecking is the sure way to bring your luxury or any other real estate marketing practice to a screeching halt. Have you ever driven in the furthest left lane of a freeway in bumper-to-bumper traffic and wondered what was the cause?

You notice up ahead that there are flashing lights of an ambulance and fire trucks on the opposite side of the freeway in the lane closest to you?

Why did your side of the freeway come to a complete stop when the accident happened on the other side of the freeway?  The people directly in front of you were rubbernecking.  There was no traffic jam on your side.

Practicing the art of staying focused leads to success and your positive outcomes.  If you find yourself rubbernecking, be sure not to reprimand yourself because that prolongs the fixation on the negative.

Just do your very best to gently redirect your attention back on track.  After consistent deliberate practice without self condemnation, your attention will shift right back to where you want to focus.

Carol,

Exactly and thank you for your perfect comment.  We did not sell residential except in the case of our home and family.  All else was referred to pros.   A

Michael Jacobs I think that "pointless peeping" fits the vocabulary bill.  We have trained ourselves not to look, and always say that the pros are there to handle it.  And we are thankful for them and their expertise.  A

Wayne Martin great analogy with horses and blinders.  I think this is a good one for people also.  Races Runners have mental blinders, they know that to look back, they worsen their time.  A

Nina Hollander, Broker I have heard many people say that, and I have read it as many times.  And if you focus from a happy state of mind, things will come your way, and from a negative state, the negative stufff will follow also.  A

Patricia,

Another wonderful and thoughtful comment from you perfectly said.  I have a theory that if we all stopped worrying about what others think of us because of who we are or how we do what we do...we would discover so much more and be more joyous, and laugh a lot more...A

Morning Alexandra.

I refuse to let almost anything keep me from my goal. When I'm in that mode, I block everything else out and move forward.

Good one and so true.  Enjoyed reading all the comments too. And yes, rubber neckers were always a pet peeve for dad. He always said they slowed down the ability to clear the roads again, plus they were potentially dangerous.

What's that old saying, something about "keeping your nose to the grindstone." The machinery may have changed but the sentiment is timeless. Work hard on what you have, not what someone else has.

Sharon Tara I am fond of the word "gently".  Many beat themselves up, instead.  And that is the wort thing someone can do. A
