I've Seen Grown Men Cry

                                                           Time To Say Goodbye

Everyone knows that moving from one home to another takes a lot of time, planning, and emotion. You work hard to get the house ready to show and sell and then even harder to sort and pack.
You have friends and neighbors you won’t see any more after you move and need to take time to say your farewells to them. What no one talks about is the last step, the final goodbye that you need to say…to your house.

goodbye

The home you are leaving is part of you, no matter whether you’ve spent five months or 50 years living there. Each room holds memories of people and events, happy times, and not-so-good times. Just as you need to say goodbye to people to move on to the next phase in your life, you also need to say goodbye to the home that has sheltered you.

Take a few minutes in each room, think about the things that happened there, acknowledge them, cry or laugh if that’s what you feel, and say your farewell. When suggesting this time to say goodbye, I have gotten some strange reactions. In one case,  a client told me to stick to RE; he did not hire me to be his shrink. Later that day, I got a call from the seller's wife after doing this exercise. He was in tears  She thanked me.

For some, It’s grieving that needs emotional closure. You invested more than just money in your home; you invested yourself. Give yourself time to say goodbye. You will be more emotionally prepared to move forward to the next stage.

This is a fantastic post on the emotional attachment we have to our home.

Home is our "safe place", where we can say what we want (without Alexa), dress how we want, live, laugh and love.

Our family moved many times, as my Dad was transferred with his work.

My parents treated each move as a new adventure, for all of us kids.

Even as an adult, I adopted that same mindset of a new adventure.

Very wise Margaret. Too often, we try to ignore our emotions - but they're still there, affecting us.

I love this post and your message, Margaret. I think it's an important thing to do, and sellers are often surprised and how emotional leaving a home can be, even when the next phase is positive.

I remember when we sold our beach house on Cape Cod in 204 before moving to California. It was a very difficult choice and time, and very sad when we closed the doors and drove off. Hard to put into words.

Jeff

I believe those ignored emotions get us into trouble and are responsible for the mental stress years later.

I love this. It is wonderful and caring advice, Margaret.

It's funny...I thought when we listed our home of 25 years (our first home) it would be very emotional for me to leave. We had all three of our children there and close friends in the neighborhood. So many wonderful memories.

After all the hard work of preparing it for market and all the hard work of the move I left with more of a good riddance attitude.

A couple of years later the house went back on the market and I attended an open house. The emotion came pouring in at that point. I got tears going through each room, flooded with memories. I get emotional now just thinking about it.

I hope for the opportunity to walk inside each of my past three homes again some day.

It's funny the homes that resonate with me.  The house I grew up in was not an emotional goodbye.  However, my grandmother's house was...maybe because I didn't get a chance to walk through it one last time.

Sharon Tara Thanks for sharing your story. It would make a good stand-alone post. I wonder how many sellers have gone through their previous home(s) and what was their reaction.
