About Allowances. . .

About Allowances. . .

Well that’s a subject that can prompt many reactions, isn't it? Far beyond real estate and even real life.

When it comes to allowances - we may be the one providing or receiving them.  Monetarily(fiscally) and perhaps physically too. We make allowances for things, circumstances and situations for ourselves as well as influences beyond us.  The practice of allowances might enter a discussion or a negotiation of any type.

But you know something? I have discovered and continue to discover things that are learned when I look beyond the subject at hand.   I think one such discovery is found in this quote which was new-to-me but from a familiar source:

The finest workers in stone are not  copper or steel tools, but the gentle touches of air and water working at their leisure with a liberal allowance of time.

Henry David Thoreau

I think when we are young, our mind tells us we do not need to make allowances for anything. As we get older we bend our rules quite a bit  :)

Hi Michael- what an absolutely beautiful quote!!! Allowance is a word with so many meanings. Larry always says that we make allowances for our friends and their quirks and mistakes because they are our friends.

Hi Michael Jacobs - I am reminded that just last week we started giving our grandson an allowance. This allowance hits many areas which include allowing Tristan to take part in special events.

Michael, Sellers give buyers allowances for many things - carpet, old appliances and for landscaping.    Thoughts on allowances can be endless.

Michael, it's always interesting what the brain brings up when hearing a new quote.  In this case the example that connected is far from a gentle touch of water but drenching, torrents of water over time.  Probably because I recently relistened to Yale Ph.D, Geologist Dr. Robert Schock interviewed on his discovery that erosion on The Sphinx is scientifically demonstrated to be caused by water as in flooding and torrential downfall.  It's an amazing history involving John Anthony West's trick and Schock's trip to Egypt to "prove West's water erosion theory wrong."  Instead Schock changed everything previously understood on the matter and baffled Egyptologists for many years.  A documentary with Charleton Heston narrating tells the story.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - I was without my laptop for a few days so unable to "tag" people who left comments on my posts so I waited until I could - sorry for the delay.  I am glad I was able to find a quote unknown to you from a favorite author.  I think it's nice when that happens.

Nina Hollander, Broker - good to hear - I am glad you liked the quote.  Obviously it caught my attention as well.

Wayne Martin - significance is one of those interesting words because it can not only vary from person to person but from time to time with a particular person.

Kat Palmiotti - I hope that is true for you each day as well.

Brian England - it's definitely a "growing" experience.

Roy Kelley - I have been away for a few days so I am a bit tardy returning comments left on my posts and hope you are experiencing good times and better weather.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - thank you for nice comment and I am glad some wonderful memories were brought forth.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 - that helping spirit learned while young can be a lesson we continue to practice years and years later.

Rocky Dickerson - hmm - well, let me ponder on that for a while.  I am sure you might be able to figure that out for yourself with some pondering too.  🙃

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty - sounds like we could begin a discussion on pretzels and other snack foods.  Mid-day munchies maybe since it's now approaching 3PM on the West Coast.

Kathy Streib - I was away for a few days without access to my laptop and my phone can comment but not "tag" so I waited until I could respond appropriately.  And speaking of appropriately, once again Larry shows that his thoughts on allowances is spot on.

Wendy Rulnick - quite true.

James Dray - thank you - it only seems fair since you have long provided me some daily information that is often new-to-me.

Grant Schneider - that's so true, isn't it?

Sharon Tara - well, I wonder if the "l" word should be used?  Of course, I also think of the term "right versus wrong" plus no left(or right) turns.  Yikes - is my head-spinning yet?  😉

Roy Kelley - I hope your visit to the dentist last week was uneventful when it comes any pain.

Joan Cox - I was without my laptop last week with the inability to tag so I am playing a bit of catch up with comments left.  Thank you for your regular support.  I appreciate it.

Kris Collis, Associate Broker - thank you for your thoughtful comment.

There are, indeed, a number of perspectives on allowances. I particularly liked Thoreau's!
