I'm a black belt, but you might not want me on your side in a fight!  One kick to my bad knee and I'm probably going down hard!


Fact is, I'm not the hand to hand fighting type of black belt, but an engineering black belt.  Once upon a time Six Sigma Process Excellence was all the corporate rage and my Fortune 50 company was no exception.  I got the training and the medallion for certification sits on my desk.


Now you might not think engineering and process excellence have a lot to do with being a real estate agent, but there are certain aspects that can be applied.


For example, the principles of continuous improvement:  Understand your business processes and seek ways to improve them.  A little bit of improvement repeated long enough can cumulatively mean significant gains.


Over the years how we manage our real estate business has changed, and much of that comes from learned experiences and making continuous improvements.  With almost 20 years in the business for Liz and over 17 for me, there is a lot we've changed:


My blog posts from 10 years ago are not even close to what I write now.  I learned what made my phone ring for my local market and steadily shifted what I wrote.  And maybe we know a bit more about how to write titles that can catch an eye :)


The screening questions for potential clients.


How we manage transaction steps.


The methods we use to find houses for our buyers and market for our clients.


Our ability to detect market changes.


An expanded network of new construction reps.


How we manage our web presence. 


How quickly my BS detector alarms when I get cold called with the next bright and shiny going to EXPLODE MY BUSINESS offer!



The list could go on and on.


Some have been big changes, but many have been small changes, a bit here and a bit there, but adding up to real time savers.

A lot of good principles out there that can cross over.  First time I went through Kepner-Tregoe training I found that I was already doing the basics of it without knowing it.  When you work night shift with no support, you learn to troubleshoot assembly line problems.  Thankfully long past working night shift!

I do remember when 6Sigma first came into the business and so many people were spouting 6sigma without fully understanding what it meant.  I once asked a client what it meant to him and all he kept replying was just 6sigma.

It is still part of my company's training and work for the engineers, but I don't think to the degree that it once was.  It has some powerful tools, when properly applied.

Six Sigma you are totally six sigma!  Gary is Six Sigma is as well via Honeywell. I don't hear about this process/program quite as often as I used to years ago.  I happened to hear about it the other day on a biz channel and they asked about it as well. And then here you are today....with your great post. Six Sigma lives on!

And I know finding out early if someone already has an agent is one of my biggest time savers.  Not that I don't get the occasional liar, but it always comes out.  "I've already seen that home"...ummm...I didn't show it to you and there wasn't an open house...sooooooo....adios.

I think the rubber duck regatta is now virtual thanks to COVID.  The patio home and long tail search posts have proven most effective for us, but the overall digital footprint has helped us get found for agent to agent referrals.

Improvements do not have to be big, and perhaps in some cases it's far more effective to make minor changes, as you point out in your discussion of continuous improvement. Being aware of what is working, and what is not, AND an awareness of how productive the time is that we are spending (on business activities, on certain clients or prospects) is important.

Often, perfection isn't needed, and there are diminishing returns.  I could blog 10x a day, but if it's not the right content it's a big waste of time.  I'm better off with fewer but well directed posts from a business perspective, and anything else I add is mainly for social purposes.

More agents should really listen to the golden nuggets you are passing on to improve your business. Status Quo doesn't work in our world for a successful business. Understanding what is working and what is not and then continued improvement on what is working can be the key!
