Ask An Ambassador: The Glass Is Full

Which glass is full?

This week I saw a T-shirt for sale that took a new approach on the glass is half empty/half full debate.

According to the T-shirt, BOTH the glasses above are full, each totaling 100% capacity of liquid and air, the only difference being the ratio of liquid to air.

Take that perspective from a T-shirt and replace liquid and air with positive and negative attitudes and understand that you get to decide the ratio in your glass.  Full up bright and sparkly or just a few drops in the bottom?

ActiveRain isn't much different from the rest of my life.  There are some good things and some not so good things.  If you attended today's Zoom meeting you got to hear Ben's latest update and the work that is being done to fix the issues and have an improved site.

It's your choice in how you perceive that information.

You can be hopeful that better days ARE coming (and IMO we're already much better off than we were years ago when the curtains slammed shut regularly) and tolerate any workarounds you need to in the interim (and yes, I've used a workaround or two just to make this post).  And while I'm waiting I still get the benefit of learning from some great real estate agents, network across the country and have a lot of friends I'd have never found without this site.

Or option 2 is stay focused on what's not right and let it impact your mentality about being here in the Rain.

Bottom line, I don't own this sandbox and I don't set the rules.  I have a daily choice to make about where to spend my time and how to spend my time.

How much business?

How much social?

We establish our reputation in the community by how we spend our time and the attitude we demonstrate while we're here.

Is my glass always 100% full of positivity?  Nope, I have my moments of frustration too.  But never enough to keep me from coming back daily.  The gain outweighs the pain.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

I am all about choosing to seek solutions and positive ways of thinking rather than the Debbie Downer attitude.

There's little to be gained by playing the victim card.  We each make active choices.  If there's a day that the cons outweigh the pros, I know it's time to make a change.

Hi Bill- I couldn't agree more!!!  What we choose to fill our glass with is always our choice. Having been here since 2008, I've seen the highs and lows. Are there glitches here? Yes but there aren't any curtains or that darn frog or whatever creature it was. I love reading the posts here and interacting via comments and often phone calls.

And that's the thing for me.  I've seen it far, far worse.  Yes, I have to go into the html code and tinker slightly (for now) to get the font size I want.  How do I know to do that?  Just another thing I've learned from being part of this community.

Sounds like an amazing plan.  I need to do a little more of avoiding negative.  I think I'm going to push it out of my glass for the rest of the week.

I've taken a more active role in filtering out the negative people I interact with on Facebook and in the Rain.  If someone is perpetually on a negative slant, I'll give them as much of a wide berth as I can.

There are some people that I know are always sincere.  They read the post and leave a comment that ties in.  Others I could bait with a picture of a house and talk about anything else and still get a "nice listing" robocomment.

Glass is half full in my opinion in a lot of ways considering what we're going through right now around the world. I feel like something is turning a corner

It's our choice.  Things have been different in the last 18 months, and I can find positive and negative in the situation.

Hello Bill(and Liz too) - another thought-provoking post.  On a pondering level, I am quenched.

A change of pace for me with this one, a bit higher on the ponder-meter than most.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that we receive 9 negative messages to every positive one. That's a ratio that takes diligence to stay focused on the positive and not let the negatives overwhelm us.

Aug 25, 2021 05:12 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

I've controlled that ratio to more tolerable (at least on Facebook) with some snoozing/unfollowing.  Some people are just constant with the negative messages.

Good morning. The funny thing is as soon as I saw the photo and before I read the words, I said, "Well, they're both full!" Glad I was right!

As for the rest, our attitudes are everything. They shape how we view things. I'm more of the optimistic/see the best in everything kind of person. I do have to say I was a bit perturbed by a few comments on yesterday's call and by the speed of the "fixes", but chose to see the changes thus far as positive. And that's where I am!

Aug 25, 2021 05:25 AM

I'm finally seeing some changes that (ideally) should have been made long ago.  If we can get the devs to walk more in the shoes of the users, I think we'll have fewer use issues than we do now.  I know I shouldn't have to use workarounds, but I'm a realist and will do so as long as I need to.

I agree Liz and Bill Spear .  Sorry I missed the meeting.  But, back to your point, we are all still here and wouldn't know each other without AR.  Sure there are glitches, but IMO the benefits outweight the negatives.

Been here a bit and learned a few things about how things worked (and didn't work). so overall I find us in a much more positive place.  But we do need improvement or the new folks will never stick around.

Bill I did hear about the meeting and honestly glad I wasn't on it due to other responsiblilities.  I do think they'll get things fixed all in good time.  Not as quickly as we'd all prefer but it is what is and we don't own the site. I haven't had time to post on a regular basis most of this year.  Perhaps that will change once business quiets down and our big remodeling project is completed.  All in all I see my glass as full and briming over actually with all kinds of good things happening.

Aug 26, 2021 03:16 PM

The site still suits my needs even with the glitches (at least so far).  So hoping they continue to make improvements and make it worth our time.

Good evening Bill,

So glad to see your post and see it featured. It's with anything in our life..we can choose to see the positive side of things or wallow in negativity. They are working hard and even though I get frustrated its soooo much better than before! Thanks as always for your words of wisdom.

Aug 28, 2021 04:33 PM

A lot of it is just setting up realistic expectations.  I know most homes I show will not result in a contract.  I don't expect perfection from a site I don't pay for or control.  Both understandings make the day to day easier.
