Get your life priorities straight first

Deciding on the balance that you want to have between business success, family success and leisure time is the difference between judging your own success and failure.

I suggest spending some time alone-- a night, a weekend or even a few hours. Then, with pen and paper in hand, establish your goals and write down your top priorities. Your number-one priority should be where you spend most of your conscious time, and so on. Remember, it's never really been about work-life balance. It's more about integrating work and family with your personal goals.

One of my friends, Tanya Baker, an independent contractor with HelmsBriscoe, exemplifies this. In her continuing effort to meet the needs of busy meeting planners, she keeps this tip top of mind. With a husband, two small children-and a challenging career-she constantly strives for work-life balance. But it's not easy, and frankly, she admits that many women she knows have been unsuccessful in this area of their lives. "I live near a cemetery and walk through it occasionally as a shortcut going to local businesses. I have yet to see a gravestone that declares that the person six feet down was a vice president of sales or a great manager, but you see plenty engraved with ‘Mother,' ‘Father,' or ‘Wife/Husband,'" she says. "In the end, how you lived your life for the benefit of your family will be how you are remembered."

What about you? What's important in your life? Have you established your priorities before jumping head-first into an entrepreneurial lifestyle?

Thank you Kaira!  I really appreciate the reminder!

Finding balance in our crazy lives is quite challenging at times.  Attaching values to activities based on your priorities is important.

If there is one path I consistently walk, it's the one of work/life balance.  I have been selling real estate for over 16 years, have had five children and a very full life.  My career has been the ultimate in flexability and without that, I could not have succeeded as a mother, wife or agent.

The best advice for balance is knowing what you want and learning to say a polite but meaningful NO to anything else.  It works miracles.

Karia, Very well said. It is important to keep your personal family life healthy and balanced. Being happy with your life with your loved ones and friends sets the foundation for being successful in your career.

When your life gets crazy or your feeling down just remember to stop and ask yourself "Am I committing most of my time to my top priority?" Its never about achieving that "perfect" balance. Its about achieving and committing to the balance that makes you happy and works for you and your family happy.

I used to work in Human Resources in the hotel business. I actually had a review where they said I was working too much. At that time, I was single, had nothing else but work going on and I took it as a personal affront that they didn't want me there. I was coming in at 7am and leaving at 8 or 9 at night. I also felt like I was doing the best work I had ever done as it was all project driven. Fast forward years and years later. A girlfriend of 8.5 years, a house, pets, kids, and priorities change. With age, comes wisdom!
