This weekend when I was on a listing appointment and we were discussing how I was going to market his home. We discussed the main points regarding how to show the home in the best possible manner. As we were talking, it occurred to me that selling a home is a lot like the dating game.
Let me explain:
1. Preparation: Just like dating, it is important if you want to be seen in the best possible light to considerer what you want to wear and to clean up a bit. When you are ready to sell your home, you also need it to be seen in its best possible manner, and to make sure it is scrubbed up nicely.
2. Communication: When on a date, clear communication is essential. In order to get to know someone, being transparent, open, and truthful is very important. Likewise, when marketing a home, having the ability to communicate the selling points, being honest, and open regarding the market, location, pricing, etc. are key.
3. Evaluation: After a date, most people will make the determination if they wish to continue the relationship. With a listing, the hope is upon seeing the home, the future buyers will have evaluated if this home meets their needs. Understanding the feedback is helpful to the sellers.
4. Continuation: Finally, after the date, one must decide if they wish to continue the relationship or not. When a buyer tours a property, they also must determine if this is the property they wish to pursue. If so, the next steps will be to see if they can reach an agreement to get to a closing.
So yes, marketing a home has many similarities in the dating world. First impressions are key and the more a seller understands this the better. If you are ready to sell your home, preparing for the date will be key!
