John Macintyre was worn in Glasgow, Scotland back in 1857. His father was a tailor and his mother was related to the missionary and explorer David Livingston. He was trained as an electrician before enrolling at the University of Glasgow in 1878. He changed his field for medicine and graduated in 1882 with a Bachelor of Medicine degree.
He worked as a naval surgeon in London, Paris and Vienna. He returned to Glasgow with the position of Surgeon for Diseases of the Throat at Anderson’s College Dispensary. In1897, he moved to London and founded the Rontgen Society of London, serving as their first President. He died in 1928, he was 71.
What you may not know about Dr. Macintyre is that he set up the world’s first radiology department at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in Glasgow in 1895. He was asked to demonstrate an x-ray machine in 1896, the demonstration took place at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, within 12 months all Scottish hospitals had installed x-ray machines.
