Once Upon A Haus: 5782 Main Street.

5782 Main Street in Elkridge, MD is technically not a home, but it IS incredibly charming. I simply must include it in my Once Upon A House-series for several reasons.

Elkridge, MD is a town in Howard County that has often been forgotten while county resources were poured into its prominent (and more affluent) neighbors, Ellicott City and Columbia. Slowly, but surely, the trend is reversing and revitalization efforts are underway. The county invested major bucks in building an Elementary School on Ducketts Lane, a new library + senior center on Route 1, a new fire department and developing Troy Hill Park.

All good stuff but even better is the private investment that has gone into rehabbing 5782 Main Street, the building also known as the Rowles-McCauley-Petrlik house and store that sits at the corner of Railroad Ave.

According to the Maryland Historical Trust, the lot has a long and complicated history in Elkridge. The house & store probably date back to the late 1860s, were occupied by a shoemaker, carpenter, and general merchant, were (much) later converted to apartments, and in 2015 taken down to the studs and rebuild. You can learn all about the Rowles-McCauley-Petrlik house and store here

Today 5782 Main Street is (once again) a stunning building, of high quality and loads of charm. It is home to an engineering office, and a restaurant/bar. When it first opened there was also an independent coffee shop that Elkridge is sorely needing - but sadly it did not survive the pandemic. I certainly hope to see another business move in and thrive, just as The Rathskeller. As you might guess from its name, The Rathskeller is a German restaurant. Keller is German for cellar, so naturally, the restaurant is below grade, but also has an outdoor patio where live music is happening on the weekends... stay tuned to learn more about The Rathskeller, blog post is coming soon.

Fun fact: the shoemaker & his wife, Mr. & Mrs. Clemont Warns, who purchased the property in 1850 were German immigrants.

5782 Main Street is a historically significant building for this Elkridge community, a stellar example of an exceptional rehab/repurpose project, and a welcome & needed revitalization effort done right!

It's always been the vintage, the old house charm and the original details that I adore the most, that draw me in, make my [REALTOR®] heart flutter, and prompt me to pause, to listen, and then to retell their stories. I specialize in finding and marketing charming homes that are unique and rich in character, or history, or both. I believe in preservation, second chances, saving the pink bathrooms, and front porch living. In this series I highlight charming homes that I am listing to find just the right buyer for or I am admiring with my special clients; or that have simply caught my eye while exploring the [historic] communities of Maryland and [far] beyond. Adore charming homes as much as I do? Then I'd love it if you'd follow me on Instagram, @onceuponahaus is where I grow my curated collection.

Hi Andrea - that is really a lovely rehabed building.  Glad to see that opened a Rathkeller.  We need a few here.  Many have gone away.

Thank you Joan! I adore the building. There are so many architectural details that are quite special. I love the combination of stone, iron railings, and wood accents.

I couldn't agree more Michael! The Elkridge community was not a priority in years/decades past. I am so glad to see funds being channeled to this area as well as massive private investments. I am happy to report that The Rathskeller has quickly become popular!
