Ask An Ambassador: Wanna Get Stung?

Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 SAL.2002007747

I've been blogging long enough that most of you know at least a few things about me.  I don't hide my religion, that I'm a Navy vet or an engineer/real estate agent.

And while you might pick up some guesses where I stand on certain issues, there are topics you won't find anywhere in writing from me (although more than happy to talk one on one about most anything).

My Facebook page went "vanilla" a long time ago.  Flowers, dogs, cats, honeybees and other nature shots of interest to me are 99% of my wall posts.  I'm meme-less.

You want to argue politics.  Move along.

To vax or not to vax?  There might be about .001% of you who haven't already made up your minds, so my thoughts aren't likely to move you.

My main focus for some time with my blogging has been almost purely real estate related.

I know what works for us and making our phone ring, and that's direct real estate blogging, and those posts keep working for years and years.  Yesterday I received a ActiveRain contact form from a buyer from a post written about a subdivision in 2013 or 2015 (3 total posts, so could have been from either year).  3 other contacts via our Wordpress IDX site, and another call today.  They won't all turn into clients, but enough numbers coming in means decent numbers going out.

How much we want to tell the public is a decision each blogger has to make.

Maybe disclosing your voting record will bring you clients.

Maybe your thoughts on the topics du jour will appeal to your local market home buyers and sellers.

I think the typical consumer starts his or her agent selection process looking for an agent who has the expertise needed to get the job done.  But they also want to work with someone they like, someone with common ground.  And considering how polarized people tend to be, I'd rather have someone like the idea that we have cats and dogs, and honeybees, and flowers, and a Navy vet and a husband/wife team, etc., and not something that is going to make some want to slash my tires.

But it's always your call how much and what to put out to the public, with potential for both boom or brawl.

Me personally, I've been stung enough times.  I'll be over here taking care of my clients' needs.  Carry on without me if you feel the need to brawl.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Bill of Bill & Liz aka BLiz

Hi Bill- I like Facebook for the pictures and of course always love your photos of your garden and bees. Everyone has to decide just how much they want to share and that can be hard.

In regards to FB, it's gotten easier and easier for me to decide what I'll share or discuss.  I'm a bit more open inside of a few small groups, but in the general public view, no one needs to know what I've done or where I've been.

I'm so with you on this one Bill - and then some!  I do FB a little for fun and cute pics of puppies or flowers....and of course bees!

I've even backed off a lot of that posting.  I used to make a point of something daily, now it's just as I happen upon something more than seeking it out.

And in some cases they may turn into friends, but I'm looking for just enough personal information from me to give common ground.

Humbly, I respect you Liz and Bill Spear. What I don't like is when I state facts for consumer information about what's new in TX and then I receive comments that are smudged with other people's political views from out of state which don't even pertain to them because of reasons such as: 1) They don't even live in TX; 2) They aren't even a licensed REALTOR. I prefer vanilla and I also believe that if people are moving to my area or TX for the first time, they should know something that has just been passed by the legislature, i.e, HOA for the sole purpose of consumer protection.

I've never understood that when a blogger has an obvious consumer facing post designed to attract business, that some feel the need to cause conflict.  Are there times real estate and politics intersect?  Obviously so.  But a post about consumer protection and HOA isn't the time to start railing about other Texas laws and politics, especially when as you point out they don't live there.  Respect the author and their purpose and don't give them a reason to use the Delete key.

Good morning! I agree with you. We all need to decide what we do/don't want to share online, both on sites such as Facebook and here on ActiveRain. And there are some topics that are just too polarizing to discuss online, in my opinion.

Sep 08, 2021 05:16 AM

When I see a broker post that she will only hire agents with the same political leaning as she has, because basically everyone else are "bad people and don't fit with their office culture", that tells me referrals from my area which are mostly of the oppositive political leaning shouldn't be sent to her office.  I understand having convictions, but getting militant about it doesn't sit well with me.

Hello Bill(and Liz too) - is it too vanilla to think that a return to "no politics, religion or talks about sex at the social media dinner table" is not allowed?

Sep 08, 2021 06:36 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

I think Pandora's box has been fully opened, and unless you have a group that controls the input/output (e.g. ActiveRain's Q&A section), things will escalate.  I'll talk about 2 of those 3 one on one, but generally not in public, but do make the occasional exception for religion (e.g. promoting our church's Build The Walls events, but those have been sidelined by COVID).

Yes you can be relevant and not real estate related, but that only sidetracks what you do on social media for business' sake.

Oh, this is one of my pet peeves too, Bill! I am absolutely fine with my vanilla FB page. As Michael Jacobs mentioned, it's exactly what our parents taught us not to discuss at the dinner table - religion, sex, money (ones personal finances) and politics...if we could only observe that online.

Can you imagine how wonderful life would be? We've lost so many people from FB due to political discussions. They just tired of the vitriol and I hate we lost them but, that is how some deal with negativity. Me, I just move on! I prefer happy posts!!

I've lost count of how many I've snoozed and unfollowed on Facebook and the number of groups I've left so I can maintain a positive flow with my Facebook experience.  It's not 100% foolproof, but there was a lot of:  these people aren't really friends, they're unlikely to send me business, and they're causing WHY are they part of my life again?

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I forgot about finances and yes I remember hearing that as well.

YES, Bill! That is exactly right. Do you WANT their negativity in your life? What is it people say...referrals are of like-minds? I'm the same way - move upward and onward! I seek out 'happy' and that works for me! LOL

Oh, yes, Michael - you were never to discuss household finances or what anyone's salary was! I still cringe a little when at the dinner table with my inlaws - they are a no-holds-barred family (and no filters either)! I've jokingly plugged my ears while saying, "Lalalala" when the start discussing these things! LOL

While there were many good points, the statement that "how much we want to tell the public is a decision every blogger needs to make" (and those non-bloggers who are only on social media) truly resonates with me, and should with anyone reading this. It's a key decision and lots of hard work can be ruined pretty rapidly with the wrong statement or implcation.

If you want to use your blogging and social media to attract business why would you intentionally do something that will have the opposite effect.

Sep 08, 2021 05:48 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

Jeff, My thought exactly.  If someone wants to not do business with me because they know I'm a Christian and keep Sunday mornings off limits from showings, I can live with that cost.  But for most of the rest of my life and personal opinions, they're not truly relevant to what my clients need from me.  You need an agent that knows patio homes, I got you covered and then some.  You want a "regular" home agent, I can do that too.  I'll keep my engineering even keel approach to everything, destress the experience as much as possible, and do my best to protect my clients.  Those thoughts in my head will stay in my head.

Hi Bill,

Love your post and they way you said it like it is. I especially liked the part where you said "you'd be over taking care of your clients needs! Carry on without you if you felt the need to brawl." I feel the same way..I've been so busy taking care of my clients needs I wouldn't have time to brawl if I wanted too! LOL!!

Thank you!  I tried to spend more time on LinkedIn thinking it would be more business related but it's just as bad as Facebook now.  I've hidden most people who only blather on about politics and religion (oddly the two are disturbingly co-mingled now).  I want the vanilla and the business content. If I want politics, I'll go to the news channels.

Sep 10, 2021 04:09 AM

For me LinkedIn is strictly for my engineering job.  Just no good way to co-mingle the two lives with only one account.

I read just enough politics to know what's going on without going too far down the rabbithole.

For me, most of that just isn't relevant to my ability to serve them.  If they want to know if I'm vaxxd or not?  I can at least understand that and would answer, but it's not something I'm going to use as an advertising point.

My experience is most of it is just an enormous time waste.   No opinions are changed, and at best you still maintain a relationship.  At worst, the relationship ends and it might take other associated people along for the ride.

Well done Bliz! Social media works well and is effective when the member is in control of their behavior and words...The old adage of "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me." has left to never return and those words on the internet remain for all to see no matter how many times delete is hit after submitted online!

And depending on topic there are a fair number of people intentionally seeking to "misunderstand" what is written so they can further their agenda.  I just don't have the time or the energy to deal with some of those people.  I'll check a thread for participants before I'll even consider whether or not to consider commenting.
