The CRM systems that I have been introduced to and have used have relied on forced registration of the website user.  Is that just the way it has to be or are there options to let the user choose?

Hi Ray, yes some CRMs require forced registration but this is by no means the only way. For example, Realtyna's CRM for WordPress does not require forced registration but we offer this option as an add-on.
