What is Acre?

The acre is a popular measurement of land in North America and the Caribbean. It measures 4,047 square meters (43,560 square feet) in size. This quantity generally corresponds to 40% of a hectare. Surprisingly, the acreage can be traced back to the Middle Ages.

It was defined as the amount of land that could be ploughed in a single day using an ox. A football field is around 76 percent the size of an acre. Many suburban lots range in size from a quarter to a fifth of an acre.

In the imperial and US customary systems, the acre is a unit of land area. It is usually described as the area of one chain by one furlong (66 by 660 feet), which is exactly equivalent to 10 square chains, 1640 of a square mile, 4,840 square yards, or 43,560 square feet, and 4,047 m2, or roughly 40% of a hectare. According to the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement, one acre is equal to 4,046.8564224 square meters. The acre was often abbreviated as ac, but it was more commonly written out as "acre."

History:

The word "acre" comes from Old English cer, which originally meant "open field" and is related to the west coast. Norwegian kre, Icelandic akur, Swedish ker, German Acker, Dutch akker, Latin ager, Sanskrit ajr, and Greek ajr are all variations of the same word (agros). In English, aker was a defunct alternative spelling.

An acre is defined as "40 perches [rods] in length and four in breadth," or 220 yards by 22 yards, according to the Act on the Composition of Yards and Perches, which dates from circa 1300. An acre was roughly the amount of ground that a yoke of oxen could till in one day, as seen in the box on the right.

Equivalence to other area units:

1 acre (both variants) is equal to 0.404685642 hectares and the following customary units:

  • 66 feet × 660 feet (43,560 square feet)
  • 10 square chains (1 chain = 66 feet = 22 yards = 4 rods = 100 links)
  • 1 acre is approximately 208.71 feet × 208.71 feet (a square)
  • 4,840 square yards
  • 43,560 square feet
  • 160 perches. A perch is equal to a square rod (1 square rod is 0.00625 acre)
  • roods
  • A furlong by a chain (furlong 220 yards, chain 22 yards)
  • 40 rods by 4 rods, 160 rods2 (historically fencing was often sold in 40 rod lengths[42])
  • 1⁄640 (0.0015625) square mile (1 square mile is equal to 640 acres)

What do we know about Hectacre?

In the metric system, a hectare is equal to 100 acres, or 10,000 square meters, and in the British Imperial System and the United States Customary measure, a hectare is equal to 2.471 acres. The name comes from the Latin word area and the Greek word hect, which is an irregular abbreviation of the word hundred.

Despite the fact that the acre is the primary metric unit of land measurement, the hectare is more usually employed in practice. A hectare is equal to a djerib in Turkey, a jerib in Iran, a gong qing in mainland China, a manzana in Argentina, and a bunder in the Netherlands, according to subsequent definitions.

A hectare is around 2.47 acres, and an acre is about 0.405 hectare.
