It is a glorious day to celebrate Oktoberfest! If you missed last weekend (I didn't, since I totally earned a couple of beer by participating in Ride of a Life Time), then you get another chance!
The Oktoberfest celebration at the Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Baltimore (well, technically, it's outside the city, in Halethorpe, but Baltimore is claiming this successful venture as its own, or vice versa) is hugely popular and for good reason!
The brewery grounds are a big wide open space, and thus perfect for a proper Biergarten with multiple bar areas and plenty of room to spread out.
Be prepared to use overflow parking, to wait at the Gates (ID's will be checked) and to not get a table right away - if you want to eat German sausages and Brezeln (pretzels). The wait is more than tolerable, however, since you can walk around, visit the gift store or just hang out at one of the bar tables... that's what we did last weekend, and it took less than an hour until our table was called vs. the 1 hour 40 min estimate.
The Oktoberfest at the Guinness Brewery features German (or better Bavarian) live music, and pretty authentic German food and beer, just like you would find at an Oktoberfest in Germany. If you have any dietary restrictions, it's best to eat before visiting the brewery, however, as choices are extremely limited.
For the Oktoberfest celebrations, the Guinness Brewery has Festbier (festival beer), Schwarzbier (dark beer), Helles Lager, Berliner Weisse (love this!), and Hefeweizen. You can opt to purchase a "Stein" and get discounted refills (just $5!).
Last call for Oktoberfest at the Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Baltimore! It ends tomorrow, October 3rd which is German Unity Day.. the perfect excuse for this German girl to visit again (as if an excuse is needed ;)
Prost!
