Elon Musk is one of the wealthiest people on the planet. Known most famously as the founder of Tesla one of the most popular makers of fully electric cars, is now a tiny homeowner. Musk has made his plans clear to someday travel to Mars and maybe even colonize it. In order to accomplish his out-of-this-world goals, he has made the decision to live in a 400 square-foot prefab tiny home. But selling off his large impressive estates for a large sum of money to free up capital to afford this is just one portion of the reason why he chose a tiny home.
Some say his new home cost only $50,000 to build and it’s so small and lightweight that a Tesla car could pull it around on a trailer. Contrary to what most would think is Elon Musk-style, his home does not resemble your typical minimalist traditional tiny home. Instead of his home being located in some picturesque landscape to better enjoy nature, it is on the grounds of SpaceX in Boca Chica Texas. This is a rural area not really known for its glamorous amenities or breathtaking landscape.
Musk’s goal for his new home is not to have the biggest one in the best neighborhood, but to someday create neighborhoods and homesteads on another planet. In addition to the immense amount of investment dollars this plan will take, it will also take a large amount of planning, testing, and preparation. If you look at his current plans to develop civilization on Mars, the first thing you may notice is that the planned homes don’t resemble anything like you might see in Manhattan or a picture-perfect suburban with a large home and a white picket fence. Building a home on another planet is going to look much different than building a traditional home here on earth.
To successfully build a colony of homes on Mars, homes would need to be put up quickly and easily with as little energy as possible. Developing Mars would take a streamlined process with perfect precision in order to make it work. Putting livable homes on Mars would look more like an assembly line with advanced manufacturing processes, instead of one homebuilder customizing a home to fit a buyer’s dreams and doing so on their own more relaxed timeline.
Another aspect of Mars colony success is making very small lightweight and easily transportable materials, such as a tiny home, very similar to the one that Elon is currently living in. Another main focus of Elon’s tiny home living lifestyle is to test out the product he plans to build on Mars. He also chose the location of Boca Chica as it is somewhat similar to what the conditions would be like living on Mars is far from civilization on miles of flatlands.
Another reason that Musk is choosing to live in this tiny home that he hopes to someday build on Mars is to show that he himself would be willing to live in one of these homes. It is not just a want to create a product to push on others but to show that it is such a great product that he himself enjoys it.
