Perhaps, you were told that the Internal revenue Service, under no circumstances, will telephone you and that anybody stating to be an IRS agent is trying to cheat you. That is not entirely true. The IRS can call you, mainly when there is a massive buildup of tax returns they are dealing with. However, scams are widespread too. How do you tell what is genuine or not?
The IRS usually makes initial contact with tax filers by regular mail. However, later they could call you if you did not respond to the letters. The agency will typically telephone you if you have large amounts of unpaid taxes or if you are selected for a field audit.
It could be a sham if you have not got any letters from the IRS preceding a phone call. IRS has three collection agencies working for them. And it is essential to know that whether it is a collector or the IRS agent calling you, all tax payments are supposed to be made directly to the Treasury using the IRS website.
The IRS will never demand you make any payments over the phone, nor without a chance to question the money you owe. It is probably a scammer if the person on the other end of the line is aggressive or intimidating, requests your credit card information over the phone, threatens you with legal action for non-payment, frightens you with taking away your driver’s or business license or immigration status
Never give away private information to anyone over the phone before verifying that you are dealing with a real IRS agent. If you suddenly get a phone call from somebody stating they are from the IRS and you are unsure that it is accurate and you never received an IRS notification in the mail, be wary. You can ask for the caller’s contact information and then call your local IRS office to validate their identity. If you think the call is a scam, report it to the FTC using FTC Complaint Assistant.
