Fair housing laws - protected classes in Hawaii

Fair housing laws - protected classes in Hawaii

We all know that due to the Fair Housing Act there are federally protected classes of people who cannot be discriminated against regarding housing or real estate issues .  There are stiff penalties for violating the Fair Housing Act.

In Hawaii we also have some additional classes who are protected from discrimination in any real estate transaction or advertising.  Here's the brief list:

  • HIV
  • marital status
  • ancestry
  • age

I like to think that Hawaii is a diverse state where everyone is treated equally.

How are things in your area?  What are some of the protected classes that are unique to your state?

Aloha Georgie - if only the Golden Rule were in place. . .   That aside, it's good to be aware/know that local laws/regulations as well as federally mandated rules are a part of life(and a part of a very large library of contents).

Whether someone is within a protected class or not, I feel that nobody should be discriminated against, period.

Aloha Georgie, - As long as you do the right thing, this should never be an issue. However, in our business, we do need to be up on the current laws in our state.

You can protect and make laws up the yin yang.  However, it will not change people one bit...That comes from the inside not from imposing rules and regulaations. A

I think I have a great idea. Next time I need CE, I should take it in Hawaii. I can write off the trip  :):):)

Georgie, we do need to know these rules, but like others --- everyone should be treated fairly.

For a second I was wondering if jackasses were a protected class in Hawaii. LOL

Interesting Georgie! Like someone else said, if we all just treated one another as we'd want to be treated, we'd be in such a better place.

I just want to get the best price and terms for my buyers on a home they'll love and will hopefully grow in value. And the best price and terms and easy process for my sellers.

Outside of that, I think if we allow ourselves to get to know others who are different from us we'll be richer for it.

This is interesting, I never considered that Hawaii might have additional protected classes.

Matthew O'Hare Yes, and some other states do as well... I was hoping to get some insight into what other states have... how about your state?
