Frida Kahlo’s Garden
Exhibit at the Cannon Art Gallery in Carlsbad
Carlsbad has a well-known reputation as an arts community, with plenty of arts and crafts shows, performance theater, musical events, galleries and public art (e.g., the Carlsbad Art Wall), and so much more.
We are especially blessed to have the city-owned Walter D. Cannon Art Gallery.
The Cannon Art Gallery is located at the Dove Library Complex in South Carlsbad, and features multiple and varied exhibits every year. The current show – Frida Kahlo’s Garden – is a truly special offering for the art community.
The traveling exhibit (Carlsbad is one of 3 venues for this show in California) runs through October 20th so there is still plenty of time. If you are an art lover, or even if not, you should take the opportunity to see it.
Frida Kahlo is considered to be one of the more significant artists of the twentieth century (as noted in the gallery’s brochure) and this special show is a wonderful experience.
We visited Thursday afternoon and it was such a visual treat, with several reproductions of Frida Kahlo’s paintings, multiple photographs, authentic memorabilia (on loan from a private collector), a traditional dress, pottery, her address book, and more.
There was abundant information to read and view about Kahlo’s life (1907 – 1954), her inspirations, and her time with husband/painter Diego Rivera, all of which added a very personal touch to this exhibit. All paintings were reproductions 0 understandable given their value!
Walk-ins are welcome but unfortunately the remaining guided tour is booked – but no worries, you will still enjoy this special traveling exhibit, courtesy of the NEH on the Road, a National Endowment for the Humanities initiative.
Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday from Noon until 7:00 pm, and Friday and Saturday from Noon until 5:00 pm. They are closed Sunday and Monday.
