How Is the Rising Cost of Fuel Affecting Your Business?

By
Home Inspector with Complete Home Inspections, Inc. TN Lic#050

Having read several articles about the rising cost of fuel and how it is affecting people in the service industries and taking a personal inventory on how it is adversely affecting mine, I was wondering how it is affecting your business and what are you going to do to combat the situation?

Personally, it cost me about $37.00 to fill my tank where before it was costing about $24.00, but the real increase that I have seen is in the cost of supplies that I need to run the business. My other inspectors are feeling the pinch at the pump more so. I feel that I have no choice but to increase the cost of inspections and pass some of the increase to my other inspectors who do not have as fuel efficient vehicle as I drive.

Funny, when I purchase my Prius, many people wagged their heads and called me an idiot. Now a few years later the same people are calling me a genius. Quite a difference a few years and a few dollars at the pump makes…

What’s your take?

Have you joined my birthday alarm? It is fast painless and the best part of all, you will be helping me out.

Because I need your help, subscribe to my Active Rain blog.

Thanks, Michael

Michael, I work out of my home office and combine errands as much as possible. You'll spend a lot on gas showing homes ( I just put 50 miles on the car from 4-6pm this afternoon) but it's something you've got to.

I havent let the high prices effect my business, you can buy a lot of gas with selling one home, some people will use it as an excuse to fail. Before the high gas prices it was probaly the weather, too picky of clients, too many homes they want shown, ect ,ect ,ect.

Linda... Thanks for your input. I have a Ford van that sets in the yard because it only gets 14 MPG.

Debbie... It is easy to rack up miles... I have close to 60K on mine after 3 years...

Bart... That is true, but I can't get that much money doing an inspection, I wish I could... But you are right, some clients are picky...

Michael I really like your post!

Me and my wife both want to buy a Prius, and it won't be long before we do.

All these huge gas burning vehicles are doing nothing but making the gas companies money. People have mentioned to me that the Prius pollutes the environment when you dispose of it, what ever. People are always tying to find an excuse not to do something right.

I am jealous of your car, but not for long!

Robert... Thanks for stopping by. I really like my Prius and it has been a very dependable vehicle. I just change the oil, fill it with gas and drive it...

$686.32 later.... It's definitely not cheap, but what are we going to do?  We fished until about 12:30 last night under the big open sky and were back out this morning at about 7:30.  I could have stayed home and mowed the grass (the Deere is much better on gas) but what fun would that be?

I still have to show houses and meet with clients.  I am consolidating trips more but at the end of the day I've got to to what I've got to do. Doesn't stop my heart from fluttering at those numbers clicking by though.

Diane... I use mine to haul my ladders and other equipment, but I do know of several real estate agents in this town that drive them to haul their clients between houses...

Charles... The price is holding at about 4 bucks here too. Funny how the price of gas went to 4 bucks and stopped isn't it?

Unfortunately the rising cost of gas is going to hurt people, not at the pump, but at the grocery store and when they buy other daily neccesities. Many people can alter their driving habits, but we can't alter the other neccessities.

Sean... You are absolutely right. I have already started modifying my driving habits. However, staples for my personal and business use are steadily increasing... Thanks for the comment.

Now if I could only find a way to strap my ladder down to the roof of a Prius, I'll be in great shape.

I have a F-150 ex cab, and it is costing me about 85.00 to fill it up every week, give or take. I had to raise my Inspection price 10.00 recently to try and combat the 4.00 a gallon we are seeing here in Indy. The price of fuel is pushing costs on EVERYTHING up. Unfortuneatly, this is a trend we will all continue to see until something is done, or they can come out with an electric truck!!

Mike... I have a fold up which I put in my hatch back... I also have a set of racks that I use for hauling my kayak that I use if I have a commercial building and I need to get up several floors...

Well lo and behold. After reading and responding to your post Michael, I decided to do some searching for what is coming down the pipe in the next few years. I actually found an electric truck made right here in the good ol USA (Ontario, CA.). It will be available to the public in 2010. A bit pricey at 45,000 and the bed isn't as large as one would like, BUT it is total electric, 0-60 in less than 10 seconds, top speed of 95mph, Plugs into a regular 220 recepticle, and goes on a charge for over 100 miles!! Supposedly when it hits the consumer market in 2010, it will have two batteries that will allow it to go 300 miles on one charge. On top of those things, it's also a cool looking little truck. Not like some of the other funky looking electric cars and trucks out there with three wheels. Needless to say I have already put in my reservation for when these become available.

If anyone else is interested , check out http://www.phoenixmotorcars.com/index.php and put your name in. I talked to them this morning, and they told me the waiting list is already nearing a year, and is growing everyday!

All I can say is, It's about time!!

The higher the gas prices get, the more money I save with my Prius!  (vs. my old 15 mpg Nissan Pathfinder)  I love it!
