Crazy English: Oh boy I can relate to this...

Real Estate Agent with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices 01238708

Crazy English: Oh boy I can relate to this one. FYI one of our Active Rain friends recently posted about this very subject. So with that said I had to grab the book that has been sitting on top of all the other books waiting  for me to read.... (Keep in mind I had the book since 1989).

I guess it is never too late to pick it up for the second time. Interestingly, then to boot I had cut out an article in 1996 that Ann Landers wrote and was inside the book. Well see for yourself...

Ironically I had a Yellow Sticky Note, from the last time I picked up the book to this quote:..."

In 1750 Phillip, Fourth Earl of Chesterfield, wrote, in a letter to his son, "One false spelling may fix a stigma upon a man for life" If Lord Chesterfield's chilling dictum is true all of us are stigmatized, for who among us has not stumbled into the potholes and booby traps that dot the terrain of English orthography?

Hope you  enjoyed  reading this post and if you want more quotes from the book let me know:)

Dear Endre,

Sounds like an entertaining book. You must not have moved too often to still have a book that you aquired so long ago.

Language can often provide humorous moments.  I will never forget visiting London.  And, the keeper of the house, an old guy of about 60, asked, "What time do you want me to knock you up in the morning?"  Apparently, in the British vernacular, that translates to, "What time do you want me to wake you in the morning."  But, here in America, it has quite a different connotation.  Same language, but different continent!🙃

Hello Endre - I am still chuckling at the comment by Myrl Jeffcoat.  That said, the English language demonstrates all sorts of craziness.

Good morning, Endre... I've always found going back to a good book is like reconnecting with a good friend.

Too funny - my husband and I were just talking about the english language and in the conversation decided we could do with less letters.

For example, why do we have a "K"? Half the time it's silent (knot, knickers, etc) so it's useless, and the rest of the time, a "c" would work just fine. I also got rid of "Q"

That seems like it would be a really good read.  I am going to keep it in mind since I hope to eventually become more of a reader.

Every language has its oddities, and English is no exception.  I think that Myrl Jeffcoat illustrated it perfectly.  Happy Wednesday.  A

Endre when it comes to speaking a writing I am so far beyond being stigmatized that a new word is going to have to be created for me.

Hi Endre- this looks like an interesting book to read!!! I love the snippets you offered us. Isn't it fun to thumb through an old book and see what notes you may have taken or what news articles you might find in it!!!

Endre I've been a student of language for many years. While living in Mexico as a teenager I really learned how crazy English can be for others to learn - and the same went for Spanish.  And then in college with a communications degree it was full speed ahead with having a blast making words work and keep people interested and entertained or whatever the goal was.    Very cool that you just happened to pull this book out.  It sounds like a fun read!

I left early the next morning, even though the guy was cute and at least 20 years younger!  I was with my daughter and grandson on that trip, so I had to be on my best behavior, otherwise things could have been different!🙂
