Beyond the pale

Real Estate Agent with Jameson Sotheby's International Realty

I don't often gasp while reading a news article, but I did with this one.  Apparently a woman was sexually assaulted on a subway train outside of Philadelphia.  Horrible, right?  But not surprising in today's world.

What astonished me was that this occurred over a period of 27 stops on the subway... and (and this is the kicker)... there were other passengers on the car who were watching, and recording the event with their phones.

SEPTA Transit Police Chief Thomas Nestel III, seen through window at left, stands by following a news conference on an El platform at the 69th Street Transportation Center, Monday, Oct. 18, 2021, in Philadelphia, following a brutal rape on the El over the weekend.

The woman was initially groped by the man, and eventually raped by him in the presence of others (and no, it was not a gang... these were literally strangers, just other riders on the train), and not only did they not intervene... but they stood by and recorded the event.  Not one of them called the police, not one of them even attempted to help this poor woman and prevent the rape.  They just held up their phones recording the tragic rape.

I know that we've become inured to stories about crime in today's world.  But this is beyond the pale.  I hope she hunts down and sues each and everyone of those witnesses to the rape.

Here's the link to the story.

That is a sad testimonial to the indifference of people to each another and no one willing to step forward and help

That was exactly what I thought when I heard this story. Reminded me of the Kitty Genovese murder in my hometown NYC in the 1960's.

I remember that one... it was back in the 1960's.  Sad to think that we haven't progressed much.

I don't know that we can fault the entire country, but it sure is a sad state of affairs.

I believe there are better ideas than hunting down for law suits.  Oh wait...that would be criminal.  I am shaking my head.  M

I heard about this and it is so awful.  What in the world were those people thinking? Are we so jaded that we can't step up and help someone being hurt? At least call 911? I don't get it.

Hi Alan- I too heard about this and am sad, livid, and frightened for the state of our country. I know it's not everyone but why couldn't one person throw their phone at the jerk!  I think of the passengers on Flight 93 who banded together to do whatever they could. I too hope that she can find all of those who just did nothing. Sue them, and let us know who they are!!!!

I don't know how many people were watching, but the report seems to indicate that there was a fair sized group.  It would only have taken one or two of them to step in to save that poor woman.

Alan May  yes indeed you would not find me on the subway as you could wind up dead there for what anyone cares . When I was a much younger my first job coming home from work after school someone pulled a knife on me - no one did a thing = everyone saw - You would not catch me dead taking a the subway in Philly as you could wind up dead there . What a disgrace ! Glad it made national news! Can you believe NO One Called 911
