The Patient Impatient

Every Spring we purchase hanging flower baskets from Menards in Minot. I don't go "whole hog", we usually purchase the cheapest ones on sale for about $6.00.

They seldom last till the first killer frost because we often lose interest and the sun bakes them to death due to our lack of diligence.

This year was a little different as I watered them nearly every day because of our drought so I never really forgot about them. What was different was that two of our baskets hung in our garden area that is fenced off to keep out the deer.

About three weeks ago when Carol and I decided we had our fill of tomato's and squash we took the fence down. Over night the deer came in and ate nearly everything including the flowers... right down to the dirt!

As you can see some of the plants in the pot refused death and started to grow back. Today the first bloom appeared with another close behind. The growing season continues for it and several other plants now in my office.

Deer can be real heartbreakers when it comes to gardening.  At my house, I use to have a small pond.  The raccoons treated it like it was the own private Playboy Jacuzzi.  The work to keep it clean from their muddy shenanigans, prompted me to take the pond out, and put in a dry creek bed, with Baby Tears and Ferns.  However, I now not only have raccoons, but possums, and a skunk that think it fun to dig up the dirt and baby tears and toss it out onto my brick patio.  I suspect they are looking for grubs.  I put up motion activated lights to distract them.  Alas, it hasn't helped much.  I am thinking of putting in a critter cam.  At least I might have a little entertainment.

Racoons can be very dangerious Myrl Jeffcoat , especially for pets. Lucky for us I've only seen one once (when I was trapping ferrel cats I caught one).

Hi Bob... I love impatiens... too sunny and hot here for them, sadly. My yard is fully fenced front to back and I've not had any deer issues fortunately. My potted geraniums are still blooming... it's been nice and warm here.

I have a fence as well but unless you fence is at least 5' they will get in here Nina Hollander, Broker . I've seen them jump some pretty high fences, it's amazing!

As that little plant is working so hard to offer color, it should be taken to a protected area so the deer don't clip it as well.

Point well taken Ed Silva and now if they want a bit out of it they will have to come into my downtown office for a bite.

Hello Bob "RealMan" Timm the deer had a good meal, and didn't care of your hard work to rise flowers. Have a great weekend!

It had a least I nice snack John Pusa . Perhaps it did the plant a favor as I probably would have just chucked it but I had to see if I could save it from this disaster.

Thank you Ron and Alexandra Seigel . I'm kind of glad the disaster happened as it motivated me to clean the pots up and bring them to the office.

Bob "RealMan" Timm  We do not get many deer here but we do get some. I will say it is unseasonably warm not complaining mind you. Lots of squirrels funny little creatures and many other animals. The only thing that destroyed the plants around here was the terrible hail storm we had

Hail storms certainly can be horrible Hannah Williams . It's been a while sinse a serious one has passed through Minot... thank God!

Hi Bob- your story reminded me of all of the caladiums I once planted in front of our home in Leesburg, VA. The next day the deer thought I'd planted them just for them and they were gone.

Hi Bob - those pesky deer!  This is why I don't bother planting vegetables.  I am just not the attentive.

I am more attentive to flowers than vegetables Grant Schneider with the exception of the first few ripe tomatoes on the vine.

Bob we've got some plants that just never seem to give up, much like yours.  Vinca's and I see Gary has managed to bring 4 pots back to life again!!  It's kind of fun as they'll kee growing all 'winter' long here in Phoenix - and all next summer until it gets to hot (August).
