Apple Hill, then Apple Butter!

We recently visited Apple Hill to celebrate our anniversary and purchased a bunch of really great tasting apples. We decided to try making apple butter for the first time.

I used the crock pot recipe found in this article, Apple Butter (3 Ways!), as a rough guide. It is pretty easy. There is an option to peel or not peel all of the apples. We chose not to peel them. Was I being lazy? Maybe. Did it turn out really good? Yes and the author of the article says that it adds extra structure to the apple butter. We have a pretty big crock pot so I put everything into the crock pot and turned it on. I did not measure the apples. I just filled the crock pot to the top with apples and turned the crock pot on high for three hours. After three hours, we dropped the temperature to low for another 8 hours or so. A few minutes with an immersion blender and we were done.

The apple butter turned out really tasty. I think we will do this again next year.

Hi Endre Barath, Jr. , when I mentioned that I thought we could reach another 31 years, Mary Margaret just rolled her eyes. I will take it one day at a time. Ha! How have I been using the apple butter? I love peanut butter sandwiches so I have been adding apple butter to those. I also plan to give most of it away as fall presents.

Raymond Henson, eXp Realty So funny you posted this . Yesturday I was in a Super Walmart they had a whole wall of jellies and preserves. A nice man came up to me and complained that they did not have orange marmalade but they did as I picked it up and laughed as it reminded me of Paddington Bear but he wanted one made in England. I showed him Apple Butter which had the least sugur and sodium and calories we had a long conversation about where it was made . It was made locally I purchased it and he kept looking for orange marmalade :)

I hope your apple butter is the best, Hannah Williams. I had actually tried to get Mary Margaret to make applesauce, one of her specialties, but she said that would be too much so I opted for apple butter. Next year, Applesauce!

Hi Dorte Engel! When one of the vendors gave us a free apple to try, I really learned that there is a world of difference in the flavor and we made our apple butter out of his apples. I do like the oddball varieties!

Oh, I LOVE apple butter, Ray! I used to take the boys to the local apple orchard and pick a bushel, then go home and create fun things - apple butter, apple pies, apple crisp, etc. Now, I grab a bag or two from the roadside farm stand since it's just the two of us. I got these yesterday to make apple crisp for dinner tonight!

I'm definitely going to try your apple butter recipe - that sounds DIVINE! Thank you for sharing.

If I had my pick, Debe Maxwell, CRS., I would choose an apple crisp or an apple pie above apple butter, but Mary Margaret is not a fan of those so apple butter was the choice.

We used to take our boys with us too, but I think we only picked apples once together. The other times we were apple buyers and food eaters! Those were fun days!
