Embrace the Dark Side

In honor of Halloween, I want to share a few of my favorite dark and dramatic paint colors and some of the ways you can incorporate them in your home.

Accent Wall

This is an obvious one. But using a dark color on an accent wall will add so much drama to a space. People tend to discount dark colors because they think it can possibly make a room feel too heavy. That's not always the case though. The key to making a dark accent wall work is by creating balance throughout the space. For example, having a lighter-colored couch and some adding darker colored pillows to pull in the dark accent wall.

Interior doors

Painting the interior doors of your home a darker paint color is becoming increasingly popular. As a painting contractor, we have had multiple requests for painting doors black. And I have to say, I am here for it. 

Shiplap

Shiplap is super popular and not to mention a real statement piece in a home. But do you want to the secret on how to make the shiplap in your home a true show stopper? Paint it a dark paint color. I recently built a fireplace in my master bedroom and use shiplap as a surround. I decided to paint it one of my favorite black paint colors, Tricorn Black by Sherwin Williams, and let me tell you, that was a perfect choice. 

Trim

Trim is another way to incorporate dark colors. Trim doesn't always have to be white. Sometimes a dark color like Soot by Benjamin Moore is a better choice. In my office, all the trim is painted black. It gives the space a very classy look.

Furniture

Ah yes, I am an avid furniture restorer and saver. I hate to see beautiful old, well-made wood pieces of furniture tossed to the curb.  If you don't like the color of your old dresser, paint it a dark paint color. I'm telling you it's such a fantastic way to 1. save money and 2. incorporate darker colors into your decor.
