We have a new set of evening song birds playing their nightly concert. Perhaps this bird is a night owl, but it sounds just like a day bird, whatever that may be called. My husband just arrived into town and I figure if this "City Girl" has a question about nature, she just asks her husband, Dan about it. Especially, since he has an undergraduate degree in Wildlife Fisheries Resources. He listened and he said that is probably a "Dickie Bird". Well, of course, why didn't I know that? I thought maybe the bird was a dysfunctional bird or maybe he got his days and nights mixed up.
I never forget the story of his professor at the University of Idaho that taught Ornithology. That is the study of birds. This professor would get very upset and frustrated when the students could not identify the hundreds of birds that were on the school campus. He had spent his lifetime studying birds of all things! Wow, can you imagine that? Can you imagine trying to distinguish bird sounds. Some may not be that difficult but there are hundreds of different species of birds out there. Especially in our neighborhood with all of our trees, streams, walking trails and living near the Boise River just a few blocks away.
Isn't it amazing how unique and so many personalities there are in our world? Not one of us is alike, whatsoever! Sure, we may have some similarities and likes. However, it is important to remember that each of our clients are unique and have their own style, personality and likes and dislikes. Sometimes, we just need to take time and just ask and listen to the songs they sing. What gets them excited?
I teach and train a lot of students in a variety of Color, Decorating, Redesign, Staging and or Marketing Classes. It is interesting to me that some of my students appear to be bored. Then they will come up after wards and they will get so animated and just light up as they share something that they could really relate to or they really appreciated that I shared in class. You can not go by their expressions! Some people are more animated or sing louder songs like these birds. Or they seem to sing at the wrong time. I thought that my neighborhood birds were dysfunctional or something. I think it is funny. Then when one bird is done singing, there is another one that echoes and starts up across the street. I look and listen to nature now that I live in this area of Boise and Idaho. There are daily reminders to me that we are all different, sing different songs, at different times. We are all unique.
Next time you hear a bird sing, remember about our neighborhood "Dickie Birds" and realize we are just as unique as those birds. Have you sung any unusual songs lately? What about your clients? What kinds of songs are they singing? Are you listening, really listening to the songs they sing? If you are not connecting, maybe you can listen a little more and hear the songs that really make them happy?
