On Turnover. . .

About

What Goes On In My Brain

The word turnover can be used in a variety of ways and in so many different situations.  It has certainly been used in one way or another as it pertains to the exceptionally low level of properties available for sale during this dearth that is being experienced in real estate markets in many areas along with the speed they seem to "disappear".

It is a term that has a certain history to it.  Many can share stories of what they have experienced in the past.  Yes, life repeats itself sometimes.  Typically this repetition occurs in different ways.  Once again its those twists and turns that remind of us that the dissimilarity makes it unique.

It’s also a familiar term in retail where the turnover of merchandise is key to a successful operation.  In fact, the accounting term L.I.F.O. Last In First Out - became a familiar mantra I heard in meetings for many years.  But that industry has long felt the presence of turnover in another form too.  That is in the turnover of staff.  It’s something that many industries “feel”.  It seems to be a part of the bigger picture of operating during a "peak" time or not.

So it’s understandable why turnover is a most-discussed topic.  Once again, there is a history of it.  Some businesses handle it better than others.  There can always be lessons learned.  Some of those lessons are happening right now - others can be gazed(and even gleaned) from a distance.  Time and place plus circumstances can become a part of the conversation as well.

Looking for a Quick Fix? Nah, that's not the purpose of this post. However I am thinking of turnovers of a different kind.  Food for thought?  Maybe or perhaps just a craving for a snack.  It’s all good, right?

Michael Jacobs Makes cents  to me clean the shelves  of what you have in inventory now .  In fact when I was making my banana bread there was sour cream on sale a known brand  a large size for an unusually cheap price which made me look at the experation date . It was still good but not enough to buy  more than 2 , Happy Friday

Though I just finished an apple and crunchy peanut butter bar for lunch, a cherry, strawberry or apple turnover or danish does sound delish, Michael!

Michael Jacobs It's good if it happens to be a cherry turnover. In my case, it would be an apple turnover.  However, that is definitely not on my menu. I am waiting for pumpkin pie ... my all-time favorite.

Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! and Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist - it's been some time since I have eaten a turnover of any type.  Not that I have anything against them but the "opportunity" to do so hasn't been there.   Note to self - pay more attention.  😃

Michael, now, thinking of turnover at restaurants we frequent, and when our fav server is no longer there.   Hate that....

Roy Kelley - I just came back from my early morning walk and while it might be too cold for some Southern Californians the temperature along with the condition of the weather were okay with me.  Here's hoping your day in Maryland is good as well.

Joan Cox - unfortunately that is a part of the hospitality business.  We only hope the employees have moved onto better opportunities.

Hi Michael:

My immediate thought was about housing turnover, as it were, but possibly being hungry I thought of food. And reaching back into my HR background many years ago employee turnover was often a hot topic. And then while sleeping I often do this.

Hey Michael how about an Apple Turnover? seriously we had an impromptu visit to Vroman's today did not call since it was a hit and run type visit and I noticed all new people not the regular staff  we were used to seeing  from previous visits.... kind of sad...

Michael Jacobs - when I hear the word turnover I immediately think of HR. I was always creating reports on contract-to-hire turnover, employee turnover, attrition, Summer Intern turnover, and termination with reduction in force turnover. Many companies use that term to budget, plan, and strategize. Funny, I don't think about turnover in the housing market now as I did during short sales and foreclosures. Although it is predicted, because history repeats itself, it is no fun.

Endre Barath, Jr. - seasonal help in any organization(especially a retail one) can bring some new faces forward.  My experience whenever shopping or even visiting Vroman's is that one can expect those expressions to be helpful.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - offices of all kinds can show signs of change especially as life continues to evolve.  Those who have spent any time in "watching" people, trends as well as different aspects of everyday life will pick up some additional clues as they add to their personal(and professional) data base depending on the situation.

HI Michael Jacobs - I worked in retail at May Co. in the Quad in Whittier as well as in the staffing industry. Both areas "turn-over" is extremely important.  One you want it and the other you don't!

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - yes it can be quite conundrum when the two get "mixed".
