Should you sell your home during the holidays?
Some people say you shouldn't try to sell your home during the holidays. I think it's a great time to put your home on the market. There's usually less competition (because some people think you shouldn't list during the holidays). Fewer houses on the market and still lots of buyers looking in my part of the word is a good combination for a seller. And aren't a lot of people in the buying mood this time of year?
Where I live there is no snow so that is not an issue. Your landscaping requires less work from you to keep it looking decent. That's important for that great first impression of your home! I know I don't have to go out and mow the lawn and trim the hedges every week like I do during the spring and summer.
Of course everyone likes looking at homes decorated for Christmas too. If you live in a neighborhood where lots of people decorate their homes there may be a few more people than normal driving by your house looking at the decorations. Go ahead and throw some Christmas lights on that sign in your front yard! Make it visible day and night!
People also love looking at Christmas decorations inside of houses too. That beautiful Christmas tree in the front window or in a corner of your living room will look great and buyers will imagine their Christmas tree being there next year. Buyers always try to imagine where their couch or favorite recliner is going to fit in your house as they walk through. (I've heard it a hundred times at least) Now imagine how they are going to feel about your house when they see your beautiful Christmas tree in just the perfect spot. It's going to make an impression and make them feel good about your house.
Now of course the holiday decorations are not going to make a messy cluttered home look like a million bucks. You still have to keep the rest of the house clean and tidy. And you don't want to cover every surface in your house with decorations. As in everything show some restraint. Don't make your house feel smaller because you have your collection of 50 giant nutcrackers spread out in the living room taking up every nook and cranny. Less usually is more!
So don't be afraid of selling your home during the holidays. You never know, you just might melt Scrooges heart when he sees your beautifully decorated home!
