There are some places where I think personal is good.
In the right circumstances, in the right amount, personal can be a very good thing for us personally, and for our business.
At the closing table I often mix the personal with business.
While our garden has been a disaster of weeds and clutter over the last couple of years, it still offers me opportunity to take some pictures that I enjoy sharing on Facebook. Each year I'll pull what I think are a dozen of my best/most interesting photos and use Shutterfly to make boxes of note cards to give as closing gifts. While note cards might be a bit "old school" in today's world of emails/texts/social media posts, there's still a place for a hand written note.
There's no "cards by The Liz Spear Team of RE/MAX Alliance" or any other advertising on the cards, but I know that whenever they pull one of those cards they'll remember where the cards came from.
That's use of personal in a good way IMO.
On the other hand, there are certain aspects of my personal life I'm going to keep personal because I find there's very little positive to be gained by sharing that aspect of my life.
E.g. if I share my opinion on anything political (in this forum or any other), there are some possible and likely outcomes:
1. You totally agree with me.
2. You totally disagree with me and decide I'm the scum of the earth because I don't align with YOUR personal thoughts.
3. Some stranger wants to pick a fight with me and otherwise cause trouble.
4. I lose the opportunity for business from a consumer and/or agent referrals.
Far more negative outcomes that positive for me, and frankly I'm not looking for more marks on my permanent record :)
I'm more than willing to talk one on one on MOST topics, personal to personal so to speak.
But I'm not here in the Rain to lose friends and lose business. Both can still happen (it has, and it will), but it's not the primary driver for why I'm here.
It's your option, you can be as personal as you want to be if you're prepared for the consequences.
Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador,
Bill & Liz aka BLiz
