Ask An Ambassador: It's Personal

By
Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 www.LizTour.com SAL.2002007747

There are some places where I think personal is good.

In the right circumstances, in the right amount, personal can be a very good thing for us personally, and for our business.

At the closing table I often mix the personal with business.

While our garden has been a disaster of weeds and clutter over the last couple of years, it still offers me opportunity to take some pictures that I enjoy sharing on Facebook.  Each year I'll pull what I think are a dozen of my best/most interesting photos and use Shutterfly to make boxes of note cards to give as closing gifts.  While note cards might be a bit "old school" in today's world of emails/texts/social media posts, there's still a place for a hand written note.

There's no "cards by The Liz Spear Team of RE/MAX Alliance" or any other advertising on the cards, but I know that whenever they pull one of those cards they'll remember where the cards came from.

That's use of personal in a good way IMO.

On the other hand, there are certain aspects of my personal life I'm going to keep personal because I find there's very little positive to be gained by sharing that aspect of my life.

E.g. if I share my opinion on anything political (in this forum or any other), there are some possible and likely outcomes:

1.   You totally agree with me.

2.  You totally disagree with me and decide I'm the scum of the earth because I don't align with YOUR personal thoughts.

3.  Some stranger wants to pick a fight with me and otherwise cause trouble.

4.  I lose the opportunity for business from a consumer and/or agent referrals.

Far more negative outcomes that positive for me, and frankly I'm not looking for more marks on my permanent record :)

I'm more than willing to talk one on one on MOST topics, personal to personal so to speak.

But I'm not here in the Rain to lose friends and lose business.  Both can still happen (it has, and it will), but it's not the primary driver for why I'm here.

It's your option, you can be as personal as you want to be if you're prepared for the consequences.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador,

Bill & Liz aka BLiz

Bill,

We keep the personal out of the social life and always have.  By nature we have a private side, and I heartily agree with you.  I have been given lovely notecards with no promotion, and I enjoy them.  Happy Tuesday.  A

I've seen too many trainwrecks and just have no interest in going down the political rabbithole in public as one example.

Hello Bill - I have seen far too many examples of forked tongue syndrome in and away from social media.  It's definitely not a spoonful of sugar however it is delivered.  Talk about mixing metaphors.  Or are those just utensils used as tools of trade?

HaHa - yes, that image definitely comes "alive".  Online and "off".

The old cartoon about "on the internet, no one knows you're a dog" does apply.  Is the online persona real, or a facade?

Liz and Bill Spear - I swear! I checked FB and noticed some local lady from my subdivision was appalled because she was concerned about food and products off the shelf and she offered some tips thinking she could be helpful. Instead she got a lot of insane political rants, backlash, and a lot of criticism because of what she wrote. Lucky for me, I didn't read her post because the powers that be took it down. So, she decided to write it all over again. She must have posted moments before I saw it because the this was her second post (with explanation why she writing the same thing all over again) and the other one was removed. I closed the neighborhood gossip column and came here. Yours was the first one I read. Yes! I'm laughing but not at you. I am always thankful for everything you post and I have never had any reason to complain. Thank you Liz & Bill!!! Loved the photo too!!!

I love reading certain comics every day.  What I know to avoid is the comments underneath the online comic because it seems for some that even the most innocent comic with no obvious political slant turns into an excuse for another political rant.

Some people just have to learn to drop the shovel, the hole is already deep enough.

And there can be a lot going on with a dandelion, I loved the patterns of the individual seeds to be.

Liz and Bill Spear - I'm with you on this topic. As the dandeloin teaches, look to the good and spread joy. I can't think of one child who hasn't had fun blowing dandeloins in the wind, playing, and enjoying life. The seeds look like a burst of stars that float when you give them a gentle blow.

What do you think the world would be like if people abided by the Constitution and there was an Amendment to free speech against political rants?

But there's a long history of political rants, Sam Adams and company got us started :)

There is a very fine line that we must tow when we posy anything anyplace as there are people enjoy nothing better than to find an excuse to tear apart and being too personal can be a bad thing

Ed, Definitely a risk of those seeking to be "offended" finding a way to interpret even the most earnest of comments.   There are things I'd like to say on some threads, but I take a look at who else is commenting and know it's best not to put forth that opinion (or any not perfectly aligned with the group).

I'm accustomed to holding back a fair amount of what I think.  An output of my Navy and Corporate America days.  Some days I'd rather be employed than right.

Hi Bill:

I think the note cards are a great idea. I made many of my own cards with my photos (no advertising) but haven't done much with note cards as gifts...something to consider.

As far as being personal, well, there are always potential consequences from everyhing we do, good and bad. Something to keep in mind.

Jeff

I think the risk often depends on the venue.  Go into a public forum on Facebook and the troll percentage is much higher than it would be here in the Rain.

I can still care even when I choose to keep my personal opinions close to the chest, it's just a matter of how and when I choose to put that aspect of my life out there.

Different opinions are going to happen, it's how we express ourselves during that difference that carries some weight with me.

Some things should remain personal, I do agree Bliz. Some personal things also are meant to be shared. Too many out there who come out of nowhere and want to virtually put up their dukes because my thoughts or opinion is not in line with theirs! They wouldn't dare be so bold in person.

True, a lot of things that are said on Facebook, or even here, would never be said in person.

I agree totally with you..there can be a balance of personal mixed in with business but best for some topics to be avoided. It's our choice how personal to to be with clients but have to realize there can be unintended consequences 😆

You just never know what might be a client's hot button topic, and with that the consequences of being on the "wrong" side of the issue as far as they're concerned.

I think a lot of it is knowing your audience and who is likely to react and how.  There are certain friends on Facebook that I don't engage with often not because of them, but because of their friend circle.  I know if I say anything counter to their alignment, they're not going to react well.

Sometimes it's not a good thing to get too personal.  People sometimes release too much personal information on social media which results in negative consequences.  People, be careful about disclosing information about being out of town or maybe too much information about your children or maybe too much about your financial status.  Hope you all have a great day.

Gwen,  I see it regularly in one of the local Facebook groups:  "anyone that can watch our dog while we're out of town X date to Y date?".
