"The question wasn't at what age I wanted to retire, it was a choice of balancing a comfortable income, getting my health back, and pursuing a vision for my future."
-Carol Williams

This year the ActiveRain November Challenge is to write a 300-word post each day for 10 days about what we are thankful for.

Today I am thankful for RETIREMENT. That only takes 3 words:
     "It Is Awesome". Period.

I retired in 2011 shortly after my husband passed away. I was 59.  I didn't actually know I was retiring at the time because my intent was to take a year off and rest, focus on my health, and evaluate what I wanted for the rest of my life.  My husband and job were my life. All that was left was my job. At that point, however, I didn't want to answer the phone, do showings or do anything related to work. I was tired and needed to rejuvenate.

The original year came and went, as I took time to travel to visit various friends and family. That was a much needed diversion for me.  It took me about 3 years to figure out I wasn't going back to work. Going back to work and earning more money was certainly an option. More money always comes in handy but I decided I could live comfortably enough without doing that.

Over time I feel like I found a good balance between having fun and making a contribution to society that also gives me the freedom I've come to enjoy.

I probably don't need to tell you what I do for fun... like golfing and road trips.

And, I find a great deal of satisfaction in being of service in various ways within my family, community and online.

Retirement. I made my choice. "It Is Awesome". Period.

I am so anxious for retirement, haha.  I can't quite see the finish line yet but I am hoping it will at least show itself in a few years.

Good morning, Carol... I've retired twice in my life... once at age 40 and then again at age 50... but you can see how well that took! :) I flirt with the idea, but just can't seem to pull the trigger. For you, clearly, it's been ideal.

Hello Carol - life definitely "happens".  Sometimes it involves certain expectations and well-prepared plans.  Then there are those times where other things occur.

Day 2 of this Challenge shows you are ready to face today as well as the many tomorrows ahead.

Hi Joan,

You would be able to travel much more in retirement. Maybe you and Myrl Jeffcoat  and I should go on a road trip together. She's retiring soon. 😃

HI Kathy Streib
I feel sorry for people who think they don't have anything to do in retirement. The real question after retirement is "How did I ever have time to work"? Right?

Hi Debe Maxwell, CRS
There's no going back now. LOL   I have more places to get to and my recent trip leaves me with ideas about where I'd like to return and spend more time. The Carolinas is definitely on that list.

Hi Brian England
Your time will come too! When I was your age, I was knee deep in work and family obligations.  In the meantime, continue to enjoy what you're doing. 😊

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker
It's not for everyone but the time may come for you too!  In the meantime, you seem to be enjoying what you're doing and not everyone can say that.  I feel sorry for people who are stuck in jobs they hate.

Hi Kat Palmiotti
I suspect when the time comes, you will be one of those who will know how to retire "well". It's different for everyone.  You and your husband clearly have a vision for your life in mind and have acted on it.

Hi Michael Jacobs
As you can tell, I didn't really have a "plan". Circumstances sort of forced me to make choices... and it's worked out well for me.

Hello Carol Williams

I look forward to the day I can say, and live, "I am retired".

It does take planning ... and for me, it will mean leaving my home state of California and knowing where I will transplant myself.

Cheers to many years of happy, healthy retirement!

Carol you view on retirement is the same as mine, and I think I am close to doing that soon.  Hopefully retirement will treat me as kind as it has treated you.  ☺️
