There is a lot to be thankful for and what I love is good humor when it doesn't come at the expense of others and everyone else around you enjoys being in your presence.
Laughter softens the cutting of razor-sharp criticism. Adults look up to leadership; kids look up to role-models who can make them laugh. Before adulthood the person who made me laugh the most was a woman named Ruth Buzzi, a character on a show called Laugh-In with Rowan and Martin. The original cast included Ruth Buzzi, Arte Johnson, Flip Wilson, Goldie Hawn, Jo Anne Worley, Henry Gibson, Pamela Austin, Roddy Maude-Roxby, and Eileen Brennan. As a youngster and student, trying to get through tumultuous times, I did not turn to drugs but was turned on by good humor. Laughter really is the best medicine!
Laughter is a blessing. Good humor helps you to cope when times are unsettling. I do not find humor in today’s late-night comedy. Real laughing out loud doesn’t exist anymore and I haven’t found comedians as funny like those from my past. I’m not a fan of LOL, Ha-Ha, or emojis. For me, laughing died the day Robin Williams passed away. When the going gets tough and things seem bleak, good humor that keeps me laughing is the perfect mood changer.
Laughing is good for the soul. There was nothing funny about growing up and entering the Corporate World. Perhaps if I had a boss like Steve Martin or Gilda Radner from the early, really funny Saturday Night Live skits, I would have enjoyed working more and the people I reported to in business. Nobody made me laugh in Corporate like Roseanna Roseannadanna! If they had, perhaps I never would have left the corporate world. Clearly, the doors of the past must be closed but I do yearn for a culture where it’s okay to laugh at yourself and at others without criticism.
Laughing can boost the immune system. There’s nothing funny about a serious career in real estate, but I do enjoy people who can laugh at themselves and not take everything so seriously. Working with people in the real estate industry who treat others the way they want to be treated and who are pleasant to talk to and work with makes my business 100% more enjoyable.
Laughing because things are funny releases endorphins. Subsequently, it reduces stress. Being stress-free increases the probability of good health. A healthy body, mind, and emotional state of being makes life more enjoyable. This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for good humor that fills my belly with laughter.
About the photograph. I took this photograph in Montana several years ago after a group of friends went out for the evening after a long two days of workshop. The lady laughing is a doctor. Her name is Betty and she is sitting next to her sister. Betty was the first person who welcomed me to Montana and we remained friends. As a practicing physician her days are stressful yet at the end of the day, when together with friends she can laugh and make others feel comfortable. Because of how she consistently made me feel, she is someone I shall never forget. Gratitude bubbles within when people come together and enjoy each others' company.
This is my third entry for the Thanksgiving Challenge 2021 for Debe Maxwell, CRS
