Thanksgiving 2021 - I Am Thankful for Good Humor

By
Real Estate Agent with DFW FINE PROPERTIES 0506509

There is a lot to be thankful for and what I love is good humor when it doesn't come at the expense of others and everyone else around you enjoys being in your presence.

Laughter softens the cutting of razor-sharp criticism. Adults look up to leadership; kids look up to role-models who can make them laugh. Before adulthood the person who made me laugh the most was a woman named Ruth Buzzi, a character on a show called Laugh-In with Rowan and Martin. The original cast included Ruth Buzzi, Arte Johnson, Flip Wilson, Goldie Hawn, Jo Anne Worley, Henry Gibson, Pamela Austin, Roddy Maude-Roxby, and Eileen Brennan. As a youngster and student, trying to get through tumultuous times, I did not turn to drugs but was turned on by good humor. Laughter really is the best medicine!

Laughter is a blessing. Good humor helps you to cope when times are unsettling. I do not find humor in today’s late-night comedy. Real laughing out loud doesn’t exist anymore and I haven’t found comedians as funny like those from my past. I’m not a fan of LOL, Ha-Ha, or emojis. For me, laughing died the day Robin Williams passed away. When the going gets tough and things seem bleak, good humor that keeps me laughing is the perfect mood changer.

Laughing is good for the soul. There was nothing funny about growing up and entering the Corporate World. Perhaps if I had a boss like Steve Martin or Gilda Radner from the early, really funny Saturday Night Live skits, I would have enjoyed working more and the people I reported to in business. Nobody made me laugh in Corporate like Roseanna Roseannadanna! If they had, perhaps I never would have left the corporate world. Clearly, the doors of the past must be closed but I do yearn for a culture where it’s okay to laugh at yourself and at others without criticism.

Laughing can boost the immune system. There’s nothing funny about a serious career in real estate, but I do enjoy people who can laugh at themselves and not take everything so seriously. Working with people in the real estate industry who treat others the way they want to be treated and who are pleasant to talk to and work with makes my business 100% more enjoyable.

Laughing because things are funny releases endorphins. Subsequently, it reduces stress. Being stress-free increases the probability of good health. A healthy body, mind, and emotional state of being makes life more enjoyable. This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for good humor that fills my belly with laughter.

About the photograph. I took this photograph in Montana several years ago after a group of friends went out for the evening after a long two days of workshop. The lady laughing is a doctor. Her name is Betty and she is sitting next to her sister. Betty was the first person who welcomed me to Montana and we remained friends. As a practicing physician her days are stressful yet at the end of the day, when together with friends she can laugh and make others feel comfortable. Because of how she consistently made me feel, she is someone I shall never forget. Gratitude bubbles within when people come together and enjoy each others' company.

Brian England - I think we would all be healthier if we learned to laugh more. Regrets are very, very hard to live with. Keep laughing! Keep living life to the fullest!

Wayne Martin - Life gets serious when you're a kid and leave your parents house or you go to school. In the past, I recall looking at my old classroom photographs. The funny thing is, I couldn't remember the names of any other classmates except the ones that made me laugh and got sent to stand in the corner by our teachers. What they did, was never anything bad. We just had too many teachers with bad attitudes that didn't understand that laughter is a skill that needs to be developed and not punished.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 - thanks for the awesome feedback! I liked it very much! Thank you for letting me know how much you liked it.

Sham Reddy CRS - thanks for choosing what you liked best in one paragraph. I appreciate that very much!

Nina Hollander, Broker - Maurice was a class act and very clever! Yes! Good humor is therapeaudic and I think what the world needs now is to stop getting so bent out of shape and start an infectious, contagious state of  good humor to stimulate the economy and boost our spirits into prosperity!

Raymond Henson, eXp Realty - Betty is a gift to humankind! Her husband is a pilot and they have their own planes. She wrote a story and it was published about their crash in winter with snow and ice and what they experienced until they were found days later. Including their dog! As a heart surgeon, she knows how precious life is and how important it is to laugh more and enjoy being with people means first hand.

Raymond Henson, eXp Realty - You're welcome! There are incredible people we pass everyday and most of us don't even know! When someone starts a dialogue, it's up to us to decide if we want to know more or just consider it a casual acquaintance. Betty is amazing!

Hello Patricia - that e e cummings quote is another longtime favorite of mine and I too believe laughter plays an important role in daily life.  May it occur often. Spontaneously.  Hearty.

Michael Jacobs - e.e. cummings quote goes right to the soul and makes you think! I consider it good fortune if perchance I meet another human being and we can find enough things to say to each other that's interesting and we can honestly feel comfortable enough to enjoy a meal of laughter without having to pay a check and give a tip!

Hello Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP

I remember Laugh-In.  The show was funny with light-hearted humor.

Hormones change and mood is elevated with laugher – a great boost to the immune system.

Robin Williams – a man that made so many people laugh had so much darkness inside. Such a loss.

I’ve laughed my way through many challenging times.  It is good medicine.

Blessings and Gratitude for Betty. We remember how people make us feel.

Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist - Ruth Buzzie and Arte Johnson were hysterical on the park bench. There were always in character surprising us with good clean fun. I really enjoyed the show.

Our bodies need laughter to heal the pain and sorrow and maybe that's why Robin Williams was so good. It was so surprising to learn he had a very dark side that nobody could have guessed because he connected well to the human spirit. Who would have ever guessed, he reached his fullest potential by making others laugh and never (to my knowledge) offended anyone. To the public, he never appeared to have something disturbingly dark inside. It was a sad ending to a man who made us happy,

We were born to laugh. Who doesn't enjoy the sound of a baby laughing? When my daughter started laughing for the first time, her dad got out his reel-to-real and recorded her laughter. We listened to it over and over and over again for many years after. It's a natural sound that is so beautiful, you can't help but laugh along! It's a great experience for all parents and I'm sure you remember your son's first laugh too!

Ron and Alexandra Seigel The beauty of laughter is that you can be yourself and everyone else is enjoying themselves too! For me, good laughter is as good as unconditional love among family and friends.

Maurice Chevalier was an exceptional man. His signature French accent and how he connected with others was very authentic and likeable.

"Sock it To Me," George Souto - I forgot all about that classic line we all used after hearing it on Laugh-In! Thanks! There are a few skits on YouTube that are quick and funny to watch.

Laughter and good health goes together like a good breakfast for champions!

Hi Patricia I always considered myself very luckly as I grew up with a Mom was so darn funny! She taught us kids well how to not take ourselves so seriously and to find humor in even the smallest things.  We laughed a lot growing up and all of us kids could put on a comedy show par none!  As Carol Williams Laughter is the best  medicine!!

You are lucky to have a good friend like Carol Williams

My siblings and our friends were always telling jokes. Even if we heard it over and over again, it was funny! Let's start a laughing club and sprinkle the world with laughter!!!

OMG, loved this post! I could not ever imagine my life without laughter, Patricia. It gets us through the toughest times in my household and I am so thankful to be surrounded by men (hubby & boys) who share my love of laughter.

LOVED Laugh-In too! And, Roseanne Roseannadanna was my favorite SNL character of all time. I hate that she died at such an early age. I think there was a need for laughter in heaven - that's why she was taken from us!

Thanks for making me smile, Patricia!

Laughter is so good for the soul. What a wonderful moment you captured in this photo. Recently, at a dinner, a group of us laughed and laughed and laughed. Bernie contributed many one-liners that set up the stand up comic in our group. It was a  magical evening thanks to humor.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - I had such a good time with the group of people I met in Montana. They were all doctors, lawyers, musicians, writers, teachers, etc. When they let their guard down, I felt so comfortable. Being invited into their circle of friends was so welcoming! It was all so natural and fun. At that moment, I never wanted to leave.

It would have been nice to get a peak into your world on video at your dinner party. Bernie must have kept people in stitches! It has been a long, long time since I had that kind of experience. You're right, being able to laugh and enjoy others' company is really "magical!" I hope you get to do it again real soon! Thanks for sharing!

Jeff Dowler, CRS - I'm convinced, we have a shortage of good humor and people are dying without the pleasure of good laughter! Some of my best memories as a teenager was sitting on my parent's front porch with kids of all ages because of my age, my four sister's ages, and the ages of the kids who lived downstairs from us. Plus, we had the neighborhood kids on our porch too. Ours was the gathering place. It was my grandparents two-story, four flat home located in a very friendly neighborhood in Chicago. My soul was alive living with music and laughter back then.

Endre Barath, Jr. - Inside jokes that nobody else seems to understand are my absolute favorite! I'm glad your dad had such a good sense of humor and that he moved you and your mom to America from Austria. I'll bet your parents were amazing! If it didn't none of us on ActiveRain would know you.
