5 Simple Home Improvements You Can Make for a Fresh Look

Our homes are an extension of ourselves, and for many, that includes how they look. So naturally, we want our properties to look brand new and have tons of gorgeous perks that would make others jealous: but it can be hard to know where to start, and so much construction is overly difficult.

These are the best home improvements you can make and why they matter for anyone wanting to reinvent their home and make it look newer.

1. Fresh Paint or Stain Outside

Although the first thing many people go for when they're updating the exterior of their home is new siding or a new roof: it doesn't have to be that drastic unless they're ready to be replaced. Instead, consider the wood visible in your home's exterior and what colors are available to you.

If you want a natural wood color, you can get that from nearly any furniture wood stain color, even if there's currently paint on that portion of the wood. What you're going to need is a lot of fresh and free-moving air (perfect if you're outside!), a paint stripper, heavy-duty gloves, something to scrape it off with, sandpaper, and a weekend. If you're nervous about the paint stripe and the wood is already peeling, you can instead go for vinegar in concentrated amounts that you leave on the paint for several hours.  Sometimes this can be enough, but not always.

After you’ve removed the color, go ahead and sand the surface down so that it looks brand new, and then apply the stain or paint of your choice!

2. Deep Clean Windows to Let in More Light

Even if it's just the usual pollen, a dirty window can cut back on how much gorgeous sunlight is coming through. So spend a weekend deep cleaning your windows and the ledges, wood, and tracks surrounding them. Ensure they're not leaking air, and if they are, consider historical replacement windows to allow your home to keep the same look without dealing with a leak.

Deep cleaned or brand new windows ensure that so much more light is allowed through your windows and make spaces feel larger and more polished. On the outside of your home, properly clean windows will appear shinier and look brand new even if they've been in the house for years.

3. Upgrading With Attractive Safety Features

The safety of your property is a big deal because it decides how secure you feel allowing guests onto your property and how safe you'll feel as you age in this home. Unfortunately, many people overlook this improvement and find themselves getting older in a property that's not built to work around an elderly body.

Include things like deck railing, safe staircase gripping instead of just sleek wood, a shower that has no lip for easy entrance, and dozens of other tiny changes that can make a huge difference. We all age, and so even if you don’t plan on living in this home forever, consider making these updates so that you can live there as long as you want.

4. Giving Your Walls New Life

Our walls make up a lot of what we see when we're inside our homes. But, even if we have a wall covered in posters or pictures, the color that sits behind them decides on what you think of this area of your home.

Paint doesn't have to be the only option if you think the one-toned color is boring or you don't want to deal with the pain of rough walls. Putting wallpaper over textured walls saves you a lot of time, gives you the chance to have an instantly smooth wall, and allows you to consider and use any shapes, colors, or patterns that make you happy. Wallpaper is also incredibly easy to take down now, which means you can change it up whenever you want!

5. Allowing your Outdoors to Shine

The exterior of our homes is equal parts for the people who see them and for us. Thankfully, the largest changes to this part of your home can be done for absolutely free by upping your lawn maintenance game and trying new things. If you're willing to invest a little, consider adding a shading structure, like pergolas over garage entrances, and think about how the texture and form can change how you feel about it.

This is great in either your front or back yard and doesn't have to be a pergola! Consider gazebos, covered porches, structured seating areas, a fire pit, and whatever other type of structure that makes you feel comfortable and at home!

Your Home Can Look Completely Different From Simple Changes

Our homes can become a part of our personality the longer we live there because we can't help but express ourselves nearly all of the time. Although some changes are expensive or time-consuming, if you pick and choose the right ones, you can make your home look brand new without having to invest the weeks or months many home redesign shows try to make it look like it takes!
