From an Ancient Thanksgiving

By
Real Estate Agent

I'm busier than a one-legged man in a butt-kicking contest today.  Family is coming home for Thanksgiving dinner.  Today, it's all about chopping, baking, devilling, etc.  However, I'm sharing an ancient memory that came to mind. The year was 1966.  The year, I cooked my first turkey.  I was young and not yet adept at kitchen arts.

This photo was shot shortly before the bird was carved.  I had lamented while preparing the bird for the oven that it had no neck.  Only a bag of giblets in the main cavity.  However, once carving began, the neck was found in the neck cavity.  Heck, I didn't even know a turkey had that part of its anatomy!

Have a Very Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone!

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat Nice picture. I like that tray table. We used to have one just like it. You could sit in front of the TV and carve that turkey without missing the Thanksgiving Parade.

Yes that Tray was one of a set of four TV trays. They were used a lot back in the day.

That's funny.  Thank you for making me smile.  That is a great photo too. All those body "parts" get stuffed inside. Had I not seen my mother cook many turkeys over the years I would not have known either.

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat
I love that you still have that photo after all these years! I'm sure you're not the first (or last) person that has happened to.

What a fun post, Myrl... and I love that expression of a one legged man in a butt kicking contest. Your story reminds me of the time we visited our older daughter and knowing that her Dad loves roast chicken, she decided to roast a chicken for dinner. Several hours later nothing much was happening and she asked me to check on the chicken... I discovered she had not defrosted the chicken. When I told her it was still frozen she was surprised that it needed defrosting, We still kid her about that.

Myrl Jeffcoat - Oh my gosh! I did the same thing! I was so proud of making my first turkey and I was so young. Everyone laughed when they discovered what I did and it became the family joke. But, it was all good.

What a beautiful photograph of you. You are beaming with joy with that infectious smile. I can only imagine how proud you were, and from the outside, it looks like the perfect shade for a delicious turkey! It also looks like a really BIG turkey!

May you continue to remember all your sweet memories.

Myrl, I just love love love this photo! What a great story. I might have done the same thing but I'm pretty sure I called my mom and asked her how to make a turkey. These days, kids can just you tube it. They may be robbed of all the great stories from figuring things out yourself.

You don't look old enough to cook a turkey, or drive a car for that matter, in that photo.
