5 Factors to Consider When Hiring a Basement Renovation Service

You never know what you'll find in an old basement. In the early 1960s, a man in Turkey began renovating a house he'd recently bought. While tearing down some basement walls, he found an ancient underground city now known as Derinkuyu.

While you probably won't find any underground cities in your basement, you might find a few things in need of fixing or replacing. Basement renovation can be complicated, so many prefer to hire a basement renovation service to do the job for them.

As with any service, you'll need to hire the right basement renovators. We'll offer some advice on how to find them in this article.

1. Make Sure the Company has Workers' Compensation

Workers' Compensation Programs are vital when hiring renovators. It may seem like not your problem if the company doesn't offer worker's compensation, but it can become your problem in an instant.

In some industries, companies aren't legally required to offer workers' compensation benefits. These companies usually have to pay out-of-pocket if an employee is injured on their property on their dime.

That's where the snag comes in. It's not the company's property they're working on, it's yours. If someone is injured on your property and the company doesn't offer workers' compensation, you'll be the one paying the bills.

It's also worth noting that anyone who doesn't care enough about their workers to ensure them probably doesn't care much about workplace safety and how it impacts you, either.

2. Read References and Reviews

You can tell a lot about a company from how it's reviewed. While almost every company will have at least a few negative reviews, good companies won't have nearly as many negative reviews as positive.

You can even be proactive by asking family and friends if they have any experience with renovators and whether they would recommend them.

Perhaps the company did work similar to what you need. For instance, can they deal with water issues. Water is a major problem and can thoroughly destroy a basement.

3. Consider Cost

Knowing about a good basement renovation service won't do you any good if you can't afford them. That's why comparing contractor fees is going to be a big part of the process.

You may end up having to choose a service with a bit less experience or with a few fewer positive reviews because your top choice basically only works with rich people restoring Victorian mansions.

The good news is that while you might not be able to hire the service with a feature in The Wall Street Journal, you should have no problem finding a skilled and trustworthy company for a reasonable price.

How to Find the Right Basement Renovation Service

If you're the proud owner of a basement (which hopefully comes with the rest of a house), you may need a basement renovation service at some point in your life.

Knowing what to look for in a contractor can make this process much easier. That's why we've offered a bit of advice in this article.
