Alternative Investments-A Book Review

"Work Hard at your job, and you can make a living.  Work hard on yourself, and you can make a fortune."  Jim Rhone

About ten years ago, I was at a note investing seminar in Seattle.  I was fortunate to meet my good friend, Chris Odegard.  I felt like we were close friends ten minutes after I met Chris.  He is that kind of guy.  I did not know it at the time, but he was going through a difficult time in his investment life.  We were both intrigued by the note investing space and we both purchased some notes.  Over the next few years, we would call each other and discuss our challenges, successes and offer each other advice.  Yes, I was mostly on the receiving side of the advice.

Our regular calls morphed into discussion about all kinds of investments.  Chris is creative, smart and willing to try new things.  We discussed alternative investments quite a bit, notes, residential real estate, commercial real estate, private lending, business investments (like his investments in ATM machines), cryptocurrencies, etc.

Chris discusses the period of his investment life from losing 55% of his financial assets in 2009 to his retirement 9 years later, all done by investing in alternative investments and using smart financial strategies to reduce taxes.  This book is not a how to invest book.  It is more like a great coach inspiring his team to do more.  Chris wants us all to spend more time educating ourselves and, more importantly, he wants us to think outside the conventional investing box.  Chris exposed me to just about everything he did over the last few years and, all I can say is, I wish I had listened more carefully.   Chris is one of the few investors that I trust.  He has lots of great ideas and I thoroughly enjoyed his book.  A lifetime of investing for me and I still get excited reading about new investment ideas.  Well done, Chris!  You are a great coach, mentor and friend!

"To all of you who aren't where you want to be financially, you can walk a different path than the one on which you find yourself.  You can do better, and I want to help.  I want to show you the world of alternative investments and why you desperately need them in your portfolio."  Chris Odegard

His book is available on Amazon,  Get Off Your A$$ And Manage Your Money.

Good morning, Joan Cox.  I go back and forth on retiring.  I really enjoy what I do, but it can get in the way at times. 😉  Chris has helped put me on the right track to make it all a choice and not a necessity.  I appreciate you dropping by!

Not sure if I will completely either, don't have any hobbies, and really do enjoy what I do and my clients!   But, want to travel more, so that is what I am focused on.

Good morning, Nina.  Thank you taking the time to leave a comment.  When I first picked up Chris's book, I was worried that it would be tough read just before I went to bed.  It turns out that is was interesting enough for me not to put it down.  I finished it right away.  Chris did light a fire in me again.

Hello Raymond - it's interesting how people come into our lives at certain times.  I know this is a book review but that part of the story captured my attention.

I have never done much investing on my own, it seems like a lot of work to keep up with it all.  I am trusting that my financial advisor will get me to where I need to be.

Good morning, Will Hamm.  I love the quote too.  Chris used it at the beginning of his book.

Hi Michael Jacobs.  I have been to so many conventions and seminars and have become friends with only a few.  Chris and I were friends right away.  More than likely, it is because we were both going down a very similar road financially.  Whatever it is, I really was fortunate.  I look forward to the day when you and I meet face to face.

I think so, Hannah Williams.  This book is just the beginning of the adventure, but one well worth taking.  I will be buying a little cryptocurrency shortly.  The market is down which is my preferred time to buy.  The risk, I just might be trying to catch a falling knife (the price may fall further). I will not really know for a few years.

It is a wonderful and insightful quote, Endre Barath, Jr.  It just seems like I have so much work to do on myself!  It is a journey!

Howdy, Brian England.  We have never used a financial advisor, for better or worse.  I do have a very small, trusted network of investors I rely upon, one for real estate, one for cryptocurrency and a couple for stocks.  Chris Odegard is probably the closest to being a financial advisor for me.  It is ironic that I have a friend that advises me in real estate investing, given that I am an agent, but sometimes you need the perspective of an outsider.  Maybe one day I will have the pleasure of writing about him.

It is a lot of work so I can see the beauty in having a financial advisor.  It is just that they typically stay within the conventional investing world.  That can be a plus or a minus depending on the investor.

Hi Raymond Henson, eXp Realty - This is interesting and I have already subscribed to Chris's blog.  I read the "About Me" section and hit one of the blogs.  "Down by the River...", I remember it well.  A favorite of mine.  Also, I know who his business partner is.  Happy Tuesday!

Hi Raymond- we had a financial advisor at one time. I think if you're not interested or don't have the time, they can be good for you. When Larry retired, he fired our advisor and started handling it himself.

In his book, "Unlimited Power," Anthony Robbins, quoted "Jim Rohn, my first personal development teacher, always taught me that if you have enough reasons, you can do anything. Reasons are the difference between being interested versus being committed to accomplish something." And your good personal friend Chris Odegard had the good fortune to meet you, Raymond! I commend him for his book and I am honored to have had the chance to talk to you by phone and read all about the wonderful things you do to grow your family and business. You are both high achievers.
