Holiday Honey Lebkuchen

Holiday Honey Lebkuchen

I've written about our family's decades-long holiday tradition of cookie making, using a recipe passed down from my wife's family for a number of generations.

This year our younger daughter and her family (the 2 grandkids are 6+ and 4) visited for Thanksgiving. I mixed the dough on Wednesday (it stays refrigerated for days without a problem) and Saturday was the big day.

It's a several hour project typically, especially with kids involved, and this year yielded around 17 dozen cookies, in the traditional diamond shapes along with the kids using cookie cutters for other shapes - angels, snowflakes, snowmen and more. The photo was taken from the upstairs landing but I couldn't quite get the entire table-full - you get the idea!

Well it was a mess, to some extent Ed Silva  but that's to be expected.

We had a great time, and of course the grandkids could not resist tast-testing the cookies.

Good morning, Jeff... I sure do "get the idea" from your photo! That's a whole lotta cookies! As Michael Jacobs said it's "impressive on multiple levels." Personally, I'm also impressed because I'm the world's worst cookie baker.

Good morning Jeff. A tradition in our family interrupted by my grandson's severe allergic reaction to nuts and eggs. Luckily he is only 3, so next year the baking will be egg and nut free. Enjoy your cookies.

Jeff every year my wife makes fudge (best fudge ever) and give it to family and special friends.  She has had to increase what she makes every year, because as the kids grow up and move out on their own, they want their own batch of fudge.  ☺️☺️☺️

Hi Nina Hollander, Broker

Well, I can't claim to be a big cookie maker, but I have at least adapted to this tradition. I was astounded at the amount of work, especially the dough-making, when we first made them.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE®  It varies some depending on how many the kids make, and sometimes we make bigger diamond shapes. More to enjoy then they are smaller LOL.

What an awesome family activity. That's something the kids will remember for a long time. How many of those 17 dozen were lost to taste testing? 🤣
