When you are doing something that you really love you never work a day in your life. How true that statement is. That is good for the individual, but it is just as good for the employer. Inner engagement leads to higher quality work, less mistakes, less illness, and retention.

Start with yourself. And as Simon Sinek says, Start with Why. If you do not have the WHY the HOW will not matter. Motivation and goal achievement are interrelated. Knowing what motivates you is a key to achievement and knowing how to find motivation in others is a key to leadership. Dwight Eisenhower said that leadership is getting others to do what you want because THEY want to do it. Reach down and find that motivation and bring it to the surface.

I hear more and more newer workers say they left the job because they were not passionate about it. If you are not doing what you are passionate about start by doing a dream inventory. List every dream you have. Then determine which ones are most important. Think about why and what they will do for you. How strong is your why? You can take an assessment that will help you with this.

Find the why that is strong enough that you are emotionally attached to the goal and achieving it. Many people want something but then their subconscious says, “Yeah right that will never happen.” So, they reason, “I will try but I don’t want to set myself up for disappointment if I fail.”   They have created the out. But wait, what are the consequences if you fail? They could be major.

Your desire for gain is only one side of the goal achievement process. Think about a time when you did something to avoid a loss. The threat of loss is, many times, a more powerful motivator than the opportunity for gain. If you have a strong passion for achievement of your goal AND failure is not an option, then you are motivated to achieve. So find your passion and follow your dream and you will know WHY.

Create Your Dream

THE HOW... consider all possible obstacles and for every obstacle consider all possible solutions. What is the greatest obstacle? In other words, what obstacle if eliminated would greatly facilitate the achievement of your goal? Now, go ahead and set up an action plan to remove the obstacle and achieve.

This is not going to be easy. It will require changing habits and they are never easy to change. A habit keeps us in a comfort zone. We must have a greater reward to establish a new habit. That reward will help us to replace the old habit with a new one which will yield a new and greater reward. If you are passionate about what you are doing, follow these steps. You will see a difference.

You need to understand yourself then help others on your team. Help them find their why, and their benefits and consequences. This will help them find their motivation to achieve their goals. Funny how motivation and goals work.

Good morning, Grant... your post reminded me of all the people I run into who when they find out I'm a real estate broker, say "I'm thinking of trying real estate." When I hear that I know perfectly well they won't succeed. There is no real WHY behind that statement.

WHY is so important. Grant, I hear from college kids they only want a job they LOVE.

If you determine WHY you want to work in the field and WHY you are willing to work hard and develop a career and WHY you will inspire others to find their WHY.

I didn't "love" my jobs but my big WHY was I had a goal to retire at 52 years old and I was going to give it everything I had to be the best employee I could, to reach my WHY.

Hi Graynt- for those who have found their "why" in what they do, they are indeed blessed. I was thinking of those whose jobs may not fit that category but if you think about it...their "why" may be that the job allows them time for their family or gives them the money to send their children to school.

Knowing the why is so very important, especially with something so time consuming as our careers. Despite those moments I don't like, I DO know why I am doing what I am. But it helps to be reminded since the why can sometimes get lost.
