Wordless Wednesday…A Little Fruit is Good

Our neighborhood squirrels have been having fun feasting on the acorns from our neighbor’s tree.  It’s not unusual to see 3 or 4 on the grass beneath the tree and one or two on one of the branches.

When the acorns aren’t around, they love raw unsalted peanuts.

However…just like you and me…there are times when a little fruit is good!!!

In the summer, I’ve had our squirrels eat green grapes when given to them, but they can be picky.

We were at Kickerillo where many of the bushes are loaded with little red berries. I’ve seen the cardinals eat them and an occasional blue jay but it was fun seeing the squirrel eating his fruit!

Kathy I love seeing your photos and video with little squirrels!  We don't have any in our area and I miss seeing them play in the trees and yards.

Michael Jacobs they very well could be!!!  I was outside on the phone talking to Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 on her radio program when one of our squirrels came up to me and gave me the "well, where's my peanut?" look.

Hi Carla Freund one of the squirrels I used to observe would come up and take 4 peanuts, one at a time, scurry away to bury them, and then return for a fifth and eat it. Pretty smart.

Andrew Mooers | 207.532.6573 thank you!!!  This two-legged creature is staying at home for the holidays.

Kathy, you feed your squirrels, like I feel the bunnies.   We don't have a lot of trees here, so not as many squirrels.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel ahhh so that's what they are!!!  We used to have them at our home when I was growing up. They would look great in a vase.

Roy Kelley I love that idea and thank you for the photo!!!!! Hello to Chef Dolores.

Kathy Streib What a refreshing post to read!  I have those same red berries on bushes but have only seen the birds eat them and not the squirrels.

So now I am curious as to how you answered that squirrel while on my radio show? 🙃

Will Hamm that cat food attracts the squirrels (and skunks!!

George Souto I bet they love that!!!   It's so important to help keep them fed in the winter.
