The McAlpine Group is drawing plans for a $70 million, 130-unit townhome project in south Charlotte, hoping to capitalize on the area's rapid growth.
The unnamed project, proposed for an 18-acre site at Providence Road West and Old Ardrey Kell Road, will feature a range of luxury models starting in the $400,000s for about 3,000 square feet.
The site's proximity to U.S. Highway 521 and Providence Road puts it in the middle of one of Charlotte's major growth centers, says Lindsey McAlpine, company owner.
Ballantyne, in particular, has changed the character of south Charlotte from distant suburb to urban hub, he adds.
"That area is very attractive to empty-nesters as a high-end townhome market because of the amenities at Ballantyne and the access to Interstate 485 and other major roads," he says.
The company has filed a rezoning petition to allow the development, seeking a change to mixed-use from single-family residential. A public hearing on the request is scheduled for March 19, with a City Council decision expected April 16.
A general contractor and architect have not been selected.
