Throwback Thursdays…New Year’s Traditions

It’s hard to believe that another year is about to pass and once again, we’ll struggle for a few months trying to say and write 2022 instead of 2021.

It’s fun to learn what traditions others have for New Year’s Eve and/or New Year’s Day.

Ours have changed over the years in part because we…my Florida extended family…got older and wiser. In the past, we didn’t go out for dinner until around 9 PM and were there to welcome in the New Year.

This morphed into having an early dinner and coming back to our home for dessert.

Our tradition now is Maine lobster, a salad, and a small appetizer for an early New Year’s Eve Dinner followed by whatever football is on.

Being a good Southern girl, I always have black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day.  Right Rocky??  It is so ingrained in me that once I remember coming home after New Year’s Day dinner with friends and opening a can of black-eyed peas and eating a huge spoonful from it.

What about you??? What are your traditions, if any?

Hi Kathy - glad you asked.  For many years now we have New Years at our friends in Armonk.  These are the group of people with daughters the same age and we all became close as our daughters were close.  That is where we will be tonight.  Sometimes we go out for dinner and then come back for desert.  Not tonight.  We will just go to their house and leave after midnight.

Kathy,

We usually have some form of crustacean for dinner and Champagne.  And we not stay up.  We used to have dinner with friends in Los Angeles, either at our home or theirs and stay over!  A

The New Year's meal that our family used to eat was a pork tenderloin, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and black eyed peas.  I tried may times to duplicate my dad's recipe for the pork and kraut, but could never get it quite right.  Now, we really don't pay it much attention except for the black eyed peas.  Like you, seems like a must in my world.

To the best of my knowledge I've never had black eye peas. Maybe unknowingly in a soup or something.

New Year's Eve has never been much of a social event for me...never quite understood the party till midnight scene with a crowd of people. We enjoy staying home in front of the tv with snacks we enjoy. A kiss at midnight and then call it a night. LOL

I do get emotional as each year passes and the new one begins though.

Kathy as tradition has it, black eyed peas bring prosperity for the new year.

As you know my tradition is also lobster for New Years dinner.  Below is last year's feast.  ☺️

We are a bit beyond the time to go out and party hardy, but will go out early and enjoy a nice meal and then come home to wait for the New Year's ball to drop.  The New Year's dinner to appease my very Portuguese parents is a pork roast and all must have a spoon of black eye peas for luck in the new year.

Bob "RealMan" Timm it was a lot easier when I was younger!!!  Now the thought of not eating until 9 pm doesn't do it for me. If I haven't eaten by then I've lost interest in it altogether.

Brian England if he's a good Southerner, Rocky Dickerson will eat his black-eyed peas.

Chris Ann Cleland that's about the same menu we had when we were in FL with our good friends there. My neighbor had a huge party on New Year's Day so he would also use our kitchen to cook the pork and sauerkraut. He had a key so it was not unusual to wake up on New Year's morning to the smell of sauerkraut!!!
