Every year I pick a word to focus on for the year. My last 6 years have been challenging on many levels. This year my word is "ME".
It's time for me to take better care of myself!
1. My SMART goal is lose an average of 3 pounds per month this year. I am determined to make smarter food choices, replace carb loaded snacks with raw vegetables and nuts, limit potatoes, pasta and bread. These items trigger my glucose to rise. I'm diabetic. I will also eat home most days and make better restaurant choices when eating out. I already do pack my cooler when I'm on the road all day with healthy foods and plenty of water. Yes, I will have cake and ice cream now and then, but small amounts.
Part of my plan for weight loss is to also increase exercise and work on flexibility and balance. My goal is to continue swimming 3/4-1 hour plus water aerobics on opposite days 3 times a week. Add 30 minutes of yoga twice a week. Add stationary biking 30 minutes twice a week. This is totally manageable and keeps my spine healthier, improves balance and strength. I have been adding time onto my calendar for these things. Only water aerobics is a structured class but if I have to miss it for work related things, I can do it on my own earlier or after my tasks. I actually started this after Christmas except for biking. I fractured my sacrum and tailbone December 21. I can bike but need to build endurance and speed after my back heals. Now, I'm just doing a slow pace. I live in Central Florida, the pool was down to 80 this morning but that is do able. Exercise is not only good for the body, it's a great stress reducer! I can swim and meditate at the same time. Private time is essential for the mind.
I'm down 1.5 pounds so far this month. Accountability is everything with goal settings.
2. Take more time for myself. My SMART goal is to spend at least 30 minutes a day unattached to electronics and to do something just for me every day. Another one is to take at least one 3 day trip a month.
This quarter, I will be heading to Indian Beach for 3 nights this month. I do have a 7 day cruise planned in early March and a 5 day cruise planned the end of March beginning of April. I have been spending my 30 minutes reading or soaking in my hot tub now that I can actually get in it again. I also have a book of bible verses and related text for each day of the year. I have been reading the daily motivational pages every day since Christmas.
I have nothing planned for the second quarter yet but have the 3rd and 4th quarter trips planned already!
3. My SMART goal is to limit my work time to 30 hours per week. I can limit my workload to things that make me happy. Real estate is good for me. It keeps me focused, routined, and gives me extra money to travel with. I'm in my 70th year and just don't want to chase the dollar 50-60 hours a week anymore. At my age, I could retire but I don't want to do that. After all these years in real estate, I can say that working with buyers is hard on me physically. I will only work with one buyer at a time and refer the rest to my agents. I will continue to list for past customers only. I won't overload my schedule. This is the first full week of the year so I have no updates to report on this goal yet. This is the week that I work on closing out last year and catching up on paperwork. Organization to start off the new year is a must. I've keeping to my work limits, so far.
I have asked friends to remind me if I am working too much, not exercising as planned and to remind me to keep on track. They ask me what I've done for me that day. It's great to share your goals and to be accountable to those around you. Stay accountable.
No matter what your goals are for the year, be accountable, stay on track and stay focused on the end game!
Have a great year.
